Posey County is under a Burn Ban. No open burning is permitted at this time. Due to the extreme dryness and sometimes high winds, any burning outside is a great risk to property, buildings, people, and a hazard to the Firefighters that must combat fires. Further details regarding the lift of the burn ban will be issued later.

 

Heads up for local parents, Financial Aid Night is being held tonight at Mt. Vernon High School at 6:00 PM. The meeting will be held in the High School Media Center. A financial aid representative will give a FAFSA presentation and answer questions about financial aid for post-secondary education. The FAFSA window is currently open, as that started on October 1st and will run until April 15th.

 

Tomorrow night in Mt. Vernon, Alexandrian Public Library is hosting a Halloween Party at 6:00 PM. Doors open at 5:50 PM. Registration is required to attend. To register, you can call the library at 812-838-3286 or visit the information desk at the library. There will be a boo-rific show performed by Ralph Covert, the musician, of Ralph’s World at 6:00 PM in the Ohio/Wabash Room. After the performance, there will be games, photos, refreshments, treat bags, a parade, and more. You are encouraged to come dressed in a costume.

 

Harmonie State Park is hosting their Haunted Harmonie event this Saturday. The events start at 10:00 AM with the Spooky Scavenger Hunt, followed by the Sasquatch Stomp at 1:00 PM, and there will be a Pumpkin Judging contest at 3:00 PM. Bring your carved, painted, or decorated pumpkins to the Outdoor Education Pavilion for judging at 3:00 PM. The Trick or Treat event will take place in the campground from 4:00-6:00 PM. Then, from 7:00-9:00 PM there will be Hayrides that cost 2 dollars for a ride. There is also a Campsite Decorating Contest. Judging for that will take place after dark and winners will be notified. Normal gate entrance fees apply for Haunted Harmonie at Harmonie State Park. It is 7 dollars for an in-state vehicle and 9 dollars for an out-of-state vehicle.

 

A temporary road closure will impact drivers on State Road 62 in Posey County starting next week. The Indiana Department of Transportation says the temporary road closures will begin on or around Monday, October 24th. That's when contractors with Center Point Energy and High-Country Construction will be out performing spot improvements along State Road 62 near Green Valley Drive. These projects call for temporary lane closures in both directions of State Road 62. According to the project manager, traffic will be controlled by a flagger team while the closures are active. Daily work will begin at 8:00 AM and wrap up by 6:00 PM, leaving the lanes open each evening. According to INDOT, if the weather cooperates, the project could be finished by the end of the week.

 

The annual USI Midnight Madness event is this evening at Screaming Eagles Arena on campus, to introduce the inaugural Division I USI Women's and Men's Basketball teams. Doors open 8:30 PM and the event is open to the public, free of charge. Midnight Madness starts at 9:00 PM with an introduction from USI’s Director of Athletics, Jon Mark Hall. The evening will then feature USI Women's and Men's Basketball team introductions, performances from the USI Cheer and Dance teams, giveaways, and a variety of student and fan competitions. Free refreshments will also be available at concession stands in the Arena. 

 

High School Football postseason gets underway tomorrow night with the first round of Sectionals. 5-4 Mt. Vernon will play host to 9-0 Owen Valley and 7-2 North Posey is home against 1-8 Forest Park.

 

Also coming up on Saturday in High School sports is the Volleyball Regionals. North Posey will play Brownstown Central at 12:30 on Saturday at Mitchell High School. The Vikings are 26-7 on the season, while Brownstown Central is 17-15. If North Posey wins that match, they will play again in the evening for the Regional Championship against either Houser or Linton-Stockton.

 

Local Sports From Last Night: 

- USI Men's Soccer fell at #8 University of Denver, 6-0. The Screaming Eagles drop to 1-10-2 on the year. 

- The Indiana Pacers lost their season opener at home against the Washington Wizards, 114-107. Tyrese Haliburton had 26 points to lead Indiana. The Pacers are home on Friday against the San Antonio Spurs.
