Communities in Senate District 49 will receive more than $2.1 million to improve roads and bridges through the Community Crossings Matching Grant Program (CCMG). According to a press release, the program aims to advance community infrastructure projects, strengthen local transportation networks, and improve Indiana’s roads and bridges.
In Senate District 49, the following communities received grants:
- Evansville received $987,405.08
- Mount Vernon received $533,889.75
- Vanderburgh County received $657,378
Officials say through the program, the Indiana Department of Transportation matches up to $1 million annually when localities invest in road and bridge repairs. The Community Crossings Matching Grant Program offers two rounds of applications each year, with the next call for applications happening in January of 2023.
Burdette Park in is looking for lifeguards ahead of the 2023 season. While summer of 2023 is still several months away, the park is looking for interested applicants now to allow for plenty of time for those who may need certification. New certification courses take place in January and February, then again in March and April. Recertification courses are also available in February and early May. Pay starts at $11.50 an hour, with flexible schedules available for students and student athletes. More information is available on the Burdette Park Facebook page.
North Posey High School is hosting a Parents’ Night Out this Saturday. Any kids ages 3 years through 6th grade are invited. Drop off the kids for a fun night from 4:00 PM until 10:00 PM. There will be games, crafts, music, movies, and dinner. It is 30 dollars per child and 25 dollars for siblings. The event is sponsored by the Class of 2025. Please register in advance. Mt. Vernon is having their Christmas on Main Street tomorrow evening. The Christmas Parade will start at 7:00 PM and the Christmas Tree lighting will follow at 7:50 PM. There are a few more events planned for Saturday as well. At 9:00 AM there is the Christmas Character Breakfast. Then from 12:00 PM until 4:00 PM on Saturday, it’s the Kid’s Christmas Party. Food Trucks will be available, along with music and fun. At 5:00 PM there will be a Christmas Movie at Amphitheater. During this time, you can round up at the Dairy Queen in Mt. Vernon and the proceeds will go to Christmas on Main Street.
The sixth annual Bright Lights 5K Run and Walk filled Garvin Park in Evansville last night. The three-mile run allowed community members to come out and enjoy Ritzy’s Fantasy of Lights on their feet. The event was created to support Easterseals and raise money for their therapy services. This year’s goal is to raise $50,000. Around 200 walkers and 260 runners registered to participate in the event. Those that came out said it was a fun family activity that helps a local nonprofit. People will be able to enjoy Ritzy’s Fantasy of Lights from the comfort of their car until Jan. 1.
Sports From Last Night:
- University of Evansville Men's Basketball defeated Campbell at home, 72-66. Marvin Coleman II and Yacine Toumi each had 18 points. Antoine Smith added 15 points. The Aces improve to 3-8.
- USI Men's Basketball took care of Anderson at home, 78-47. Trevor Lakes paced the Screaming Eagles with 29 points. Jelani Simmons poured in 23 points. USI is 4-5 on the year.
- USI Women's Basketball lost at Butler, 58-48. Meredith Raley led the way for USI with 11 points. The Screaming Eagles are 3-4 on the season.
- Other Men's College Basketball games saw #14 IU (8-1) win at home against Nebraska, 81-65. #4 Purdue (9-0) whipped Hofstra at home, 85-66. Notre Dame (7-2) earned an 81-75 victory against Boston University. Ball State (5-4) topped E. Illinois on the road, 76-59. Indiana State (9-1) beat SIU (5-4) in Carbondale, 74-71.
- The Indiana Pacers closed their 7-game road trip with a 121-115 loss in Minnesota against the Timberwolves. Tyrese Haliburton with 26 points and 15 assist for the Pacers. Indiana is now 13-12 on the year.
- The St. Louis Cardinals have their new catcher. The Redbirds signed Willson Contreras to a 5-year, $87.5 million contract yesterday. Contreras has played all 7 years of his MLB career in Chicago with the Cubs. He is a career .256 hitter with 117 home runs.
