The City of Mt. Vernon posted on Facebook a message from the Water Superintendent. During the cold front, do not open your water meter box as it will freeze and cause extended issues. If you are experiencing issues with your water, call the water department and they will come out to help alleviate the issues. If you run your faucets during the cold front, that is alright but, keep in mind that it will show on your monthly statement.

North Posey Basketball has had their games today and tomorrow in the Toyota Classic postponed due to the incoming weather. They will make those games up by playing twice on Monday, January 2nd at 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM at Wood Memorial High School. Those two games will be against Wood Memorial and White River Valley.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch that covers all Southwestern Indiana and the northern portions of Western Kentucky and Southern Illinois. The watch takes effect today at noon and lasts until 6:00 AM Friday. There's also a wind chill watch that kicks in at 6:00 PM this evening and goes through 6:00 PM Friday. The National Weather Service says 2-4 inches of snow is possible in Evansville. The bigger issue today and Friday will be high winds mixing with cold temperatures, resulting in dangerously low wind chill levels. According to National Weather Service statistics, it's been 3,270 days, basically nine years since the last Wind Chill watch in the Evansville forecast region. In the Evansville areas, the low wind chill temperature is expected to reach minus-24 tonight and minus-16 on Friday night, according to the National Weather Service. Sustained winds later today and into Friday will be above 20 mph out of the west, with gusts reaching 45 mph at times. The weather service forecast points to subzero wind chills from 8:00 PM tonight through midday Sunday.

Emergency responders are gearing up for what is going to be a very active period of severe winter weather. One of American Red Cross's most important roles in emergency response situations is sheltering those whose homes are destroyed, often by falling trees or flooding. Additionally, they maintain disaster relief supply locations. According to Beth Sweeney, Executive Director of American Red Cross's Southwest Indiana region, “we have our disaster supply trailers stationed throughout our chapter filled with supplies like cots and blankets. Those are staged on purpose so that if it’s hard to get a trailer out to a certain location, they’re already in some of those larger areas.”

With the expected high winds, CenterPoint will be unable to send out repair crews until the storm has passed, but they say all available personnel will be on standby. In the meantime, CenterPoint is urging caution around damaged equipment. Erin Merris, Senior Communications Specialist at CenterPoint Energy, said, “the biggest threat in this storm that’s coming through is going to be the wind. You need to assume that any downed line or wire is energized, and stay clear of the lines or any objects that are touching the lines.” Both CenterPoint and the American Red Cross coordinate their actions with the Emergency Management Agency as it monitors weather conditions. Emergency responders may only be able to deploy after weather and road conditions have improved, so being prepared is still crucial.

Ritzy’s Fantasy of Lights, as well as Santa Claus Land of Lights, will be closed Thursday, December 22, due to severe weather. Officials with Ritzy’s Fantasy of Lights say this is the third time in the event’s 29-year history they’ve had to close because of weather. They say it will be too cold, and the roads could be dangerous. They are hopeful that tonight is the only night the event will be closed, but will make additional announcements if needed.

Officials with Mesker Park Zoo announced they will be closed this weekend to keep animals, guests, and staff members safe from the severe weather that’s forecasted in the Tri-State over the next few days. In a Facebook post, officials say the zoo is closing Friday through Sunday. If the weather is too severe, zoo officials say they may even close early on Thursday. Their plan is to reopen at 9:00 AM on Monday, December 26th. Zoo officials say those purchasing gift memberships in person should do so before they close on Thursday, and if you purchase one online, you will not receive a confirmation email until staff returns on Monday.

The Indianapolis Colts will start Nick Foles at quarterback for their Week 16 Monday night game against the Los Angeles Chargers, interim head coach Jeff Saturday announced today. Saturday emphasized the Colts' offensive struggles have not all been on quarterback Matt Ryan, but decided to make the change with winning in mind. Saturday said, “I feel like Nick will give us a better chance to win these last three games.” Saturday said the Colts haven't decided if Ryan or Sam Ehlinger will back up Foles on Monday, and that the team's plan at quarterback will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis to close out the season. Foles signed with the Colts as a free agent back in May. The 6-foot-6, 243-pound Foles has started 56 games over his 11-year career spent with the Philadelphia Eagles (2012-2014, 2017-2018), St. Louis Rams (2015), Kansas City Chiefs (2016), Jacksonville Jaguars (2019) and Chicago Bears (2020-2021). Over those stops, Foles has 14,003 passing yards with 82 touchdowns, 43 interceptions and a passer rating of 87.3; he was named a Pro Bowler in 2013 and earned MVP honors in the 2018 Super Bowl with the Eagles.
