Firefighters were called to a massive warehouse fire on North Morton Avenue around 4:30 Monday morning. Westbound Lloyd Expressway near US 41 was closed for a moment due the fire but was back open by the afternoon. Evansville Fire Department Chief Mike Larson says the warehouse had storage items inside of it. Fire officials are investigating the cause of the fire along with the Indiana Fire Marshall. Chief Larson also says no injuries have been reported. He says three other buildings, besides the warehouse were impacted by the fire. Several businesses had to evacuate Monday morning because of the fire. According to a press release, 70 to 75 residents of Volunteers of America’s Hope Hall have been displaced due to the damage to their facility. The American Red Cross will be providing cots, blankets, and comfort kits for all residents to be used at a shelter operated by Volunteers of America.
A temporary road closure will impact drivers on State Road 62 in Posey County starting next week. The Indiana Department of Transportation says the temporary road closures will begin on or around Monday, October 24th. That's when contractors with Center Point Energy and High-Country Construction will be out performing spot improvements along State Road 62 near Green Valley Drive. These projects call for temporary lane closures in both directions of State Road 62. According to the project manager, traffic will be controlled by a flagger team while the closures are active. Daily work will begin at 8:00 AM and wrap up by 6:00 PM, leaving the lanes open each evening. According to INDOT, if the weather cooperates, the project could be finished by the end of the week.
Coming up this Friday in Mt. Vernon, Alexandrian Public Library is hosting a Halloween Party at 6:00 PM. Doors open at 5:50 PM. Registration is required to attend. To register, you can call the library at 812-838-3286 or visit the information desk at the library. There will be a boo-rific show performed by Ralph Covert, the musician, of Ralph’s World at 6:00 PM in the Ohio/Wabash Room. After the performance, there will be games, photos, refreshments, treat bags, a parade, and more. You are encouraged to come dressed in a costume.
The Mount Vernon Police Department has extended the application deadline for new officers until October 28th, 2022. If you need an application, visit the City of Mount Vernon's new website at https://www.mountvernonin.gov and click on the police tab. The department provides great benefits, including shift differential pay, paid holidays, longevity pay, take home car, uniform allowance, retirement plan, and a new proposed pay scale. The proposed 2023 budget includes an 8% pay increase for police employees, which would bring the starting pay to $48,656. Lateral officers are eligible for immediate pay increases and an abbreviated hiring process. The annual USI Midnight Madness event returns this Thursday evening to Screaming Eagles Arena on campus, to introduce the inaugural Division I USI Women's and Men's Basketball teams. Doors open 8:30 PM and the event is open to the public, free of charge.
Midnight Madness starts at 9:00 PM. with an introduction from USI’s Director of Athletics, Jon Mark Hall. The evening will then feature USI Women's and Men's Basketball team introductions, performances from the USI Cheer and Dance teams, giveaways, and a variety of student and fan competitions. Free refreshments will also be available at concession stands in the Arena.
