News:
On Thursday of last week, the Evansville Police Department was informed about an attempted ATM theft in Mt. Vernon. According to a release, the description given to police was consistent with previous ATM thefts that have happened in Evansville. Police say the offenders are known to travel to Texas, steal a large pickup truck, take equipment that’s needed to pull open an ATM’s vault doors and stage the truck near where the intended crime will happen. EPD’s Auto Theft Unit says they received a report that officers were looking for a stolen F-350 around 8 a.m. Thursday, after the attempted ATM theft happened in Mt. Vernon. Police say they were able to watch surveillance footage from the apartment complex the truck was stolen from. It showed a car with Texas license plates drop off people who got inside the F-350 and then drive off. According to a release, the car and description of the people matched with the offenders in the Mt. Vernon theft. EPD says late Thursday night, the stolen F-350 was spotted in a different apartment complex. Detectives saw the same car pull up next to the truck, and then three people get out of the car. Those three people began putting chains, crowbars, and hooks into the bed of the truck. Police say the group left the apartment and drove away. The group was pulled over and arrested. Four different individuals were arrested. All four were from Texas and charged with Auto Theft, Conspiracy, and Criminal Gang Activity.
It's starting to look a lot like the weather in the days before Christmas 2022 are going to be ugly in the Mt. Vernon and Evansville areas. The National Weather Service says the Tri-State hasn't seen cold air like this in December since 2004, the year a historic snowstorm dumped some two feet of snow on the region. And while the snow totals for this event aren't looking like anything near that level, the temperatures will be brutal. Very cold arctic air will settle across the region beginning on Thursday and lasting through Christmas. High temperatures are forecast to remain in the teens Friday and Christmas Eve. Lows are forecast to fall near zero Friday and Saturday morning. Wind chill values are expected to fall below zero Thursday evening. By Friday morning wind chills may fall to the minus-10 to minus-20 range in some areas, which has trended colder the past few days of the forecast. Similar wind chill values are expected on Saturday morning. Some locations may observe at least 36 consecutive hours of sub-zero wind chills. Wind chill readings near minus-20 can cause frostbite in as little as 30 minutes. The National Weather Service included some information about how much snow will fall in the region. Accumulating snow appears likely for much of the region Thursday into Thursday night. There is a small possibility of it lasting into Friday morning. Precipitation may start off as rain Wednesday night or Thursday morning before colder air arrives. Current estimates point toward 2 to 4 inches of snow, but this will likely change over the next few days as there remains significant variation in model solutions. Winds will gust higher than 30 mph from Thursday evening through the early morning hours on Saturday, well over 24 hours. That means the Evansville area likely will deal with sub-zero wind chills from late Thursday until at least Saturday afternoon.
