An Evansville teenager is facing a long list of charges, including six counts of rape, sexual battery, battery on a person less than 14 years old, and strangulation. 18-year-old Luke Pokorney was booked into jail shortly after 10:00 AM. Thursday. He’s being held on no bond. Records show he has played football, basketball, and baseball at Central High School.

 

The Board of Public Works in Evansville approved funding for several community projects on Thursday. Two of those projects were from Hope of Evansville and Memorial Community Development Corporation. Hope of Evansville will receive $40,000 to provide housing counseling and down payment assistance. The Memorial Community Development Corporation received $200,000 for the Memorial CDC Youth Employment Program, which provides tools for young employees.

 

This year, donors to the Posey County Community Foundation are once again making scholarship awards available through the Community Scholarship Program. “Many Foundation donors have honored their loved ones, high schools, or professions by endowing scholarship opportunities through the Foundation,” says Amy Smith, the Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact. Students may apply for one or more scholarships, as long as they meet the particular eligibility requirements. Details about each scholarship and the application are posted on the website at poseycountycf.org/scholarships. Eligibility requirements and selection criteria are determined by donors and are posted on the website. Each scholarship is unique and supports students with a variety of backgrounds, educational goals, and economic statuses. The deadline to apply is 12:00 midnight on Monday, February 13, 2023.

 

North Posey High School is inviting the community to join them next Thursday, December 8th for their Girls Basketball game against Washington as they celebrate the ‘Spirit of Christmas.’ Trees representing the North Posey schools and decorated by their students will be available for viewing. Santa will be available for picture from 6:00-7:00 PM. Face painting and ornament making will also be available for children 12 and under. New, unwrapped toy donations will be collected to benefit Toys for Tots.

 

Coming up tomorrow in Mt. Vernon, United Fidelity Bank is having their 14th annual Pictures with Santa. The event will take place at the Mt. Vernon banking center located at 500 East Fourth Street from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Stop by and enjoy free pictures with Santa, refreshments, and crafts for the kids. Pictures with Santa is designed to help achieve the Bank’s mission while putting smiles on the faces of the children of Posey County. Pictures with Santa is free of charge including pictures, refreshments, and crafts courtesy of United Fidelity Bank.

 

Poseyville will have their tree lighting at the Community Center tomorrow at 5:00 PM. Mt. Vernon’s Christmas on Main Street will be Friday December 9th with a Christmas Parade and tree lighting.

 

Christmas in New Harmony kicks off this weekend with the Christmas Tree lighting at the New Harmony Inn tonight at 5:30 PM. It is free for everyone to attend. Then tomorrow and Sunday there are all kinds of events throughout the day. Horse and Carriage rides will be available on Saturday and Sunday for $5. Vendors will also be on site Saturday from 9:00 AM-5:00 PM and Sunday from 10:00 AM-4:00 PM at the Gymnasium and Community House #2.

 

Local Sports: 

- North Posey Girls Basketball picked up a road win at Harrison, 69-38. The Lady Vikings improve to 5-1 on the year. 

- North Posey Wrestling defeated Boonville at home, 54-27.
