The Board of Zoning Appeals met at the Evansville Civic Center on Thursday to discuss and vote on a request from Republic Services to accept more poultry waste at Laubscher Meadows Landfill. Residents near the landfill were concerned about the smell, different predatory animals and various health issues that could pop up. It was a standing room only crowd at the meeting yesterday. Before a single resident took the stand, Republic Services addressed the board and crowd with a big announcement. Attorney Michael Schopmeyer turned and faced the crowd as he announced they were dropping the poultry waste. He said Republic Services had heard the concerns, they were listening to the people and the poultry waste amendment is withdrawn. After multiple people took the stand, and arguments from both sides were heard, it ended in a 6-0 vote. The zoning committee agreed on a five-year extension to the same special amendment they reached in 2017.
Indiana State Police released new information in connection to the crash that resulted in the deaths of a mother and daughter in Dubois County earlier this week. After a thorough review of the evidence, ISP officials determined the tanker driver, identified as 27-year-old William Craney, was heading eastbound on State Road 64 new Pine Ridge Road, and unintentionally drove his vehicle off the south side of the roadway. State troopers say the tank driver over-corrected, which resulted in the vehicle rolling over. According to ISP officials, 44-year-old Julie Schnell was traveling westbound and ended up crashing into Craney’s vehicle, which was blocking the roadway. Schnell along with her 13-year-old daughter, Alayna Schnell, were both killed as a result of the crash. Julie was a teacher at Jasper High School. Officials say Craney has since been released from Deaconess Hospital, while Schnell’s other daughter is still hospitalized at Nortons Hospital in Louisville.
