Posey County Board of Commissioners announced on Tuesday that the current burn ban for Posey County will be extended through October 1st. Posey is one of many counties in southwestern Indiana and western Kentucky that has prohibited open burning during the current drought. According to the signed declaration by the board members, all nine established fire departments in Posey County requested the ban to be extended.  If any person violates the Declaration, they would be in violation of a Class B Misdemeanor, which could include fines and/or imprisonment pursuant to law.

 

The West Side Nut Club gave hundreds of thousands of dollars to the community at its annual Founders Day event last night. This year, the organization gave over $700K to different local organizations, youth programs and nonprofits. This marked the largest distribution of funds in the club’s 103-year history. They will continue preparing for the coveted Fall Festival to take over West Franklin Street beginning October 6th.

 

The Missouri Valley Conference and the University of Evansville have announced that the 2025 Women’s Basketball Tournament is heading to the Ford Center. The MVC Women’s Basketball Championship will be held at the Ford Center from March 13th-16th in 2025. All the MVC top execs, Evansville city staff including the mayor and coaches from all over the conference say Evansville was the right choice for the tournament.

 

As we head into week 5 of the high school football regular season on Friday, the Indiana Football Coaches Association released their updated rankings earlier this week. The North Posey Vikings are ranked 3rd in Class 2A. In Class 5A, Castle in 10th. Class 4A has Reitz 2nd. Several tri-state teams are ranked in Class 3A with Memorial 1st, Heritage Hills 2nd, Gibson Southern 3rd, Mater Dei 8th, and Southridge 12th.

 

Sports: 

Last night in local high school sports…Mt. Vernon Volleyball fell in 3-sets at Washington. The Lady Wildcats are now 2-10 on the season. Mt. Vernon Girls Golf shot a team score of 213 in their match against Mater Dei and Reitz. Mater Dei won the match with a team score of 200 and Reitz finished 2nd with an overall score of 206. Libby Reese paced Mt. Vernon with a score of 45.

North Posey Volleyball beat Reitz on the road in 4 sets. The Vikings improve to 12-5. North Posey Boys Tennis picked up a 5-0 win at home over Mt. Vernon. The Vikings sit at 9-4 overall and 7-2 in the PAC.

Coming up this evening in local high school sports…North Posey Girls Soccer heads to Day School for a 5:00 PM match. Vikings Boys Tennis play at Mater Dei at 4:30 PM. North Posey Girls Golf is on the road to battle Princeton at 4:15 PM.

 

The St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates at home last night, 3-1. It’s now back-to-back wins for the Cardinals over the Pirates to improve to 76-75. Game 3 of the 4-game series is tonight in St. Louis at 6:45 PM.

The Chicago Cubs lost at home against the Oakland Athletics, 4-3. Chicago slips to 77-74 on the year. The Cubs and A’s conclude their 3-game set in Chicago today at 1:20 PM.

The Cincinnati Reds pulled out a 6-5 win in their series opener at home over the Atlanta Braves. The Reds move to 74-78. Game 2 of the series is this evening in Cincy at 5:40 PM.
