Evansville firefighters were on the scene of a fire in the 400 block of Northwest Third Street early this morning. Firefighters were dispatched to the old Pearl Laundry building just before 2:00 AM. When crews arrived, they were met with flames shooting from the building. According to Division Fire Chief Mike Larson, fighting the blaze hasn’t been easy. Larson says all of the fire equipment put a heavy demand on the water supply, making it difficult to get water to the building at first. That problem has since been solved. The scene is still very active, and parts of downtown are currently without electricity because of the fire. Officials say drivers should not expect access to Downtown Evansville if they are traveling from First Avenue. There have been no reports of any injuries. The Indiana State Fire Marshal’s office is on scene to help with the investigation.

Under a new state law, you could be placed under arrest if you’re standing less than 25 feet away from a police investigation. House Enrolled Act 1186 gives police a 25-foot buffer to perform any of their duties. If a member of the public is asked to provide that distance and doesn’t comply, they can be charged with a Class C misdemeanor, which is punishable by up to 60 days in jail and a fine of up to $500. Indiana is among the first states to pass such a law. Law enforcement officials say the law won’t apply to all situations as officers will use discretion. The legislation is under review by attorneys at the ACLU of Indiana, which argues it hampers the public’s ability to hold police accountable. Members of law enforcement deny that the law limits transparency. The law takes effect July 1st.
