Three people are facing felony drug charges in Posey County after getting pulled over Tuesday. Officers with the Mt. Vernon Police Department say they saw a car with expired registration run a stop sign, leading to a traffic stop around 3:30 AM. Police say Derek Flahardy, Ashley Sandefur, and Jacob Nebelski were in the car. When officers had all three step out of the vehicle, they say a bag of pills was seen on the floorboard. During a search of the vehicle, officers say they found meth, needles, fake money, a digital scale, and more pills. They say they discovered Nebelski also had warrants out of Vanderburgh County. All three were arrested and booked into the Posey County Jail.
A pair of Mt. Vernon Basketball Seniors both received some recognition yesterday. Jackson Clowers and Logan Dutkiewicz both earned IBCA Academic All-State Honorable Mention Honors for the 2023-24 season. These individuals met criteria formed by the IBCA involving GPA, class rank, and SAT/ACT scores. After nomination, the IBCA committee votes on honors of those submitted.
A burn ban for Posey County continues to be in effect. Posey County EMA says the burn ban includes all open outdoor burns. This will be in effect until at least this Friday, as officials will take another look at the situation on Friday to decide if the burn ban should be lifted.
An officer with the Evansville Police Department confirms one person is dead after a car drove into a pond near Eagle Lake Drive on the east side of Evansville last night. It happened shortly before 6:30 PM in the area near Cracker Barrel and Texas Roadhouse. A witness says they saw the driver hit several road signs before losing control and plunging into the pond. First responders at the scene were seen performing CPR near the water. The driver of the vehicle was transported to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead. There were no other occupants inside the vehicle. Officials at the scene say a medical emergency may have caused the accident, but nothing has been confirmed at this time.
There is now a new chicken place on the west side of Evansville. It’s called Chicken Stop and is located in the old Lee’s building on Saint Joseph Avenue. Lee’s Famous Chicken closed back in November 2022. Owners say it’s the type of restaurant the area has been missing for a long time and they plan to have a similar menu as Lee’s Famous Chicken had.
The OVC Women’s and Men’s Basketball Tournament gets underway today in downtown Evansville at Ford Center and will run through Saturday. USI Women’s Basketball is the #1 seed and won’t play until Friday at 1:00 PM as they earned a double bye.
USI Men’s Basketball, who is the #8 seed in the tournament plays tonight at 6:30 PM against #5 seed Tennessee State.
In Men’s College Basketball from last night…#3 Purdue eared a hard-fought road win at #12 Illinois, 77-71. Zach Edey had 28 points to pace the Boilermakers. Purdue improves to 27-3 overall and 16-3 in the Big Ten. With last night’s victory, they also clinched the Big Ten regular season title outright. Purdue is the first team in 17 years to win the Big Ten Regular Season Championship back-to-back years. Illinois slips to 22-8 and 13-6 in the Big 10.
From the NBA Tuesday evening, the Indiana Pacers avoided a third-straight loss as they took care of the Mavericks in Dallas, 137-120. Myler Turner had 20 points, Tyrese Haliburton added 19 points and 11 assists, and Pascal Siakam chipped in with 13 points and 13 rebounds. The Pacers are now 35-28 on the season.
