Coming up this Friday, the city of Mount Vernon will be having a heavy trash pickup day. Items that will be collected include indoor and outdoor furniture, refrigerators and freezers in which the refrigerant has been removed and tagged by a professional. They ask that the items be placed where your trash containers would normally be and that the items be put out on the scheduled pickup dates and no more than 24 hours before your scheduled pickup. The Mount Vernon Fire Department is in the process of taking applications for new firefighters. Starting pay is listed at $59,476 with a $2,100 increase after the first year probationary period. Benefits include holiday pay, sick days, personal days, vacation days, a $1,000 yearly clothing allowance, Health, Dental and Vision Insurance, Life Insurance and Membership In State Retirement. They ask anyone interested to pick up an application at the fire department at 311 College Avenue. Applications will not be accepted after 4PM on April 30th.

 

The city of Mt. Vernon has announced that they are going mobile with a new app powered by GoGov. The app is a great source of information for news, events, service interruptions, and important links to the website. Staff can streamline important community communications and information to citizens in more efficient ways. When launched, the app will be available for download in the Apple App and Google Play online stores.

 

Mt. Vernon Softball plays at home this evening against South Spencer at 6:00 PM.

 

USI Women’s Basketball is getting set for their next postseason game which will be tomorrow night. The Screaming Eagles continue play in the WNIT as they won their second-round game on Sunday at home against Campbell. USI will host Buffalo tomorrow evening at 6:00 PM in the Super 16 Round of the WNIT. Buffalo is 26-7 on the year and USI is 23-12.

 

In the NBA tonight…the Indiana Pacers finish up their 5-game homestand with the Los Angeles Lakers at 6:30 PM. Indiana has won 5-straight games and they sit at 42-29 on the year. The Pacers are in 4th place in the Eastern Conference Standings. They have a 2-game lead on the Milwaukee Bucks and Detroit Pistons for home court advantage in the first round of the playoffs with 11 games left in the regular season. 

 

Opening Day of Major League Baseball is tomorrow, and the St. Louis Cardinals will begin their season at home against the Minnesota Twins at 3:15 PM. Also tomorrow, the Chicago Cubs will play at the Arizona D-Backs…the Cincinnati Reds will be home and take on the San Francisco Giants…while the Chicago White Sox will take on the Los Angeles Angels at home.
