USI’s nursing program just received a big boost from the federal government. The Health Resources and Services Administration awarded the program $5 million to continue its Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program for another five years. The funding will go towards integrating dementia-friendly initiatives in primary care while also promoting collaboration. Leaders say the grant will also help address nursing home workforce shortages.

 

A letter sent Tuesday to parents of EVSC students says they’ve adopted a new cell phone policy. The letter explains that Indiana passed a law regarding the use of wireless communication devices. Officials say the goal is to eliminate distractions caused by the use of cell phones, earbuds and other wireless devices. They say at Monday night’s board meeting they adopted a new policy “that aligns with this new state law.” School officials say guidelines will be shared with families next month and will include specific details.

 

Evansville Police are investigating a burglary at a house on the University of Evansville campus. They say it was reported this past Monday in the 1600 block of East Walnut Street. That’s the “Suzuki House,” which is a violin talent education program. Police say a back window was broken, and it was discovered things were missing. Those things include a violin worth more than $11,000, according to officials with UE.

 

Coming up this Saturday there is a Chops and Cheers event at St. Francis Church in Poseyville. Mass starts at 4:30 PM and then at 5:00 PM there will be a meal and music. The planned menu is pork chops, cheesy potatoes, green beans, coleslaw, role, homemade dessert, and drink. They say carry-out will also be available. Live music will be performed by the Schelhorn Band and there will be a Beer Garden as well. This is a 21 years and older only event.

 

The American Baseball Coaches Association Midwest Regional Coach of the Year was given to University of Evansville’s Wes Carroll. According to officials, Carroll was named the ABCA/ATEC Midwest Regional Coach of the Year after helping Evansville advance to its first-ever NCAA Tournament Super Regional. Wes Carroll says, “It’s an honor to be recognized by the ABCA and earn this award. I would like to thank our coaching staff, athletic training staff, and our strength coach. But, most importantly, I want to thank the players!  They bought into something bigger than themselves and represented our University well this season.”

 

The St. Louis Cardinals had game two of their series at home with the Atlanta Braves postponed last night due to rain. The two teams are playing a doubleheader today to wrap up the 3-game set at Busch Stadium. Game one of the doubleheader is at 12:45 PM…followed by the series finale at 6:15 PM. The Cardinals at the start of play today have won four-straight games and sit at 40-37 on the season.
