Some residents in Posey and Gibson County are still waiting for their power to be restored after last week’s storms. Thousands across the Tri-State spent a hot weekend without power, but Duke Energy and CenterPoint say their outages should now be resolved. Only WIN Energy said it is still working on restoring power for about 1,200 customers across Indiana. WIN Energy Chief Operating Officer Leslie Beard says that the company’s entire coverage area was affected by the storms that came through last Thursday. Beard said that WIN had restored power to more than half of their customers by Saturday. However, Beard said its crews worked through the 4th of July holiday to make sure electricity is restored to all customers by the goal of midnight tonight.

Youth tobacco use among Hoosiers is the lowest since 2012, according to data collected last year. According to the Indiana Department of Health’s Youth Tobacco Survey, over 1 in 10 high school students and 1 in 30 middle school students said they used tobacco in 2022. E-cigarettes were the most frequently used form, with 9.2 percent of high schoolers and 2.2 percent of middle schoolers using these products. There was a decline in the use of e-cigarettes, cigars, and cigarettes over the last decade of surveys. High school student usage went from about 23 percent in 2018 to 10.5 percent in 2022. For middle schoolers, more than 8 percent used tobacco in 2018 compared to 3.3 percent last year. Despite these declines, some health officials say it is troubling that the majority of youth who use tobacco use flavored e-cigarettes – which they say can increase the appeal of these products.
