Mike Pence is coming to Evansville today. Officials with Pence's campaign say he'll be meeting with supporters in downtown Evansville. Pence recently announced he’s running for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. Pence served as vice president under former President Donald Trump. He also served as the 50th governor of Indiana from 2013 to 2017.
The start of school is about one month away, and one local organization is doing its best to fight food insecurity for students. Until July 21st, Tri-State Food Bank is accepting donations for its "Backpack for Heroes" campaign. The program provides meals to children who depend on reduced cost or free school lunches, and those who may not have access to meals over the weekend. The organization's goal through the campaign is to raise $24,000. If you're interested in donating, text "BACKPACK" to 71777.
Applications are still open for veteran families in Indiana who may be in need of financial help getting back-to-school supplies. The Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs is inviting Hoosier veteran families to apply for the Military Family Relief Fund's Operation Back to School Program. The program is designed to help veterans and their families with essential school expenses for their kids by giving $500 per child. Applications are open from now to August 31st.
United Way of Posey County is partnering with Willow Tree of Posey County to bring much needed housing for individuals affected by family violence to Posey County. United Way of Posey County fights for the health, education, and financial stability of every person in Posey County, including those affected by family violence. As part of its ongoing assessment of critical community needs, United Way of Posey County and its community partners identified a significant gap in providing secure, local shelter to individuals escaping family violence. Until now, these individuals have had to seek shelter in Evansville. Funded by a $55,000 IN22 Matching Grant from Indiana United Ways, and in collaboration with Willow Tree of Posey County, United Way of Posey County is guiding development and expansion of a donated duplex for families and construction of a new efficiency apartment for individuals impacted by family violence.
