The Posey County Sheriff’s Office posted yesterday that it is with extreme sadness to say that Jail Commander Mark Pharr passed away on Sunday at the age of 69. Commander Pharr began his career at the office in December of 1997 as a jail officer. He served as Jail Commander under 3 Sheriffs, holding the position until his passing. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM this Friday at the Denning Family Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, with burial to follow at Bellefontaine Cemetery. Visitation will take place this Thursday from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM and again on Friday from 10:00 AM until service time. 

 

University of Southern Indiana officials say they have more students on campus this year. Officials say undergraduate, graduate and dual credit enrollment is up 2.2% from fall of 2023. More than 1,300 first-time freshmen enrolled, marking an increase of 3% over 2023. Officials say they also saw a significant 6.6% increase in the number of students transferring from other institutions. According to school officials, they have more than 9,400 students representing 47 states and 48 countries.

 

Posey County Community Corrections Director Justin Rutledge accepted a new position as Chief of Police for the Mt. Vernon Police Department after the departure of previous chief Andy Rush. Andy took a position in Madisonville, KY as student resource officer for Madisonville North Hopkins High School which moved him back to his home state. Justin has served as a member of the Posey County Sheriff's Department, as well as a former member of the Henderson Kentucky Police Department from 2011 to 2014. As Justin Rutledge steps away from the position of corrections director, the position has already been filled. On September 11th, Brittney Deig Butler was appointed to fill the vacancy. Brittney was hired by the Community Corrections office as a case manager in March of 2021. Brittney has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and is excited to begin her role as the new director.

 

The Harlem Globetrotters are coming back to Evansville. They’ll be at Ford Center on January 20th at 2:00 PM for another MLK game. They’ll be playing the Washington Generals. Tickets go on sale on September 30th, at 10:00 AM at the Ford Center ticket office or on Ticketmaster.

 

Sports:

Last night in local high school sports…Mt. Vernon Girls Soccer lost at home to Gibson Southern, 9-0. The Lady Wildcats are now 6-6 on the season. Mt. Vernon Girls Golf defeated North Posey as the Wildcats shot a team score of 180 and the Vikings had a team score of 200. Libby Reese paced Mt. Vernon with a score of 38 and McKenzie Mills shot a 43 for North Posey.

 

Coming up this evening in local high school sports…Mt. Vernon Volleyball travels to play Washington. The JV match is at 5:30 PM and the Varsity match will follow around 7:00 PM. Wildcats Boys Tennis heads to North Posey for a 4:30 PM match. Mt. Vernon Girls Golf is home against Reitz and Mater Dei at 4:00 PM.

The St. Louis Cardinals snapped a 3-game losing streak and won the opening game of the 4-game set at home against the Pittsburgh Pirates, 4-0. Andre Pallante pitched 7 scoreless innings, allowed 4 hits, and struck out 9 in the Redbirds win. The Cardinals improve to 75-75 and will play game 2 of their series with the Pirates this evening at 6:45 PM.

The Chicago Cubs have won back-to-back games as they thumped the Oakland Athletics at home, 9-2. Chicago moves to 77-73 on the year and the Cubs play game 2 of their 3-game series with the Athletics tonight in Chicago at 6:40 PM.

The Cincinnati Reds had last night off. Cincy gets a 3-game series underway at home tonight with the Atlanta Braves at 5:40 PM. The Reds have a record of 73-78.
