The search took the entire summer to find the perfect candidate, but Dr. Stephanie Stewart is the new MSD of Mt Vernon Superintendent by unanimous vote yesterday. Stewart previously served as the Principal at Tekoppel Elementary School within the Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corporation and was also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Southern Indiana. Stewart says that she's ready to get started.

Stewart begins with the school system this morning and is entering the job with enthusiasm. Stewart says her goal is to observe and springboard off of current initiatives of teachers and staff and their visions. Her term will end on June 13th, 2026.

 

An Owensville man was arrested Monday afternoon after police say he pointed a gun at a child. According to Indiana State Police, 24-year-old Austin McGill was caring for his three children at his home Sunday morning when the incident happened. Troopers say McGill struck his 8-year-old stepdaughter and then pointed a loaded gun at her. Police say the children’s mother was not home during the alleged attack. McGill turned himself in after a warrant was issued for his arrest. He was booked into the Gibson County Jail and faces charges of Pointing a Firearm at Another Person, Neglect of a Dependent, and Domestic Battery. All of these charges are Level 6 Felonies.

 

The couple accused of stealing money while on the job at Burdette Park has been sentenced. Court records show Scott and Catherine Thompson were both sentenced to two years of probation. The couple was also ordered to pay Burdette Park $64,434.73. The restitution will be paid in monthly payments of $2,147.82, according to court records. They are accused of withholding cash payments from leased campground spots. The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office started investigating a report of irregularities in campground receipts back in December of 2021. Officials say it was initially estimated that more than $17,000 was missing. Officials say Scott was the campground manager, while Catherine took an active role in the management of the campground, including handling the intake and deposit of rental fees.

 

Mt. Vernon River Days is this Friday and Saturday. It all starts at 11:00 AM on Friday with the opening ceremony. The ceremony will take place by the American Legion Post #5. Some of the highlights for Friday include the “Smoke on the Ohio” BBQ Competition from 11:00 AM until 8:00 PM. There will be free inflatables provided by Old National Bank at the kid zone from 11:00 AM until 7:00 PM. The Little Miss and Mr. River Days Pageant is at 6:00 PM. Then at 7:30 PM on Friday the 2nd Annual Lighted Boat Prade in the Ohio will take place. Wolfgang’s Orchestra performs from 8:00 PM until 9:00 PM and Friday’s events end with Fireworks at 9:00 PM.

Mt. Vernon River Days on Saturday starts with the 5K Run at 8:00 AM in the courthouse area. There will be a Pet Parade at 10:00 AM and a Corn Hole Tournament at 11:00 AM. The “Smoke on the Ohio” BBQ Competition continues from 11:00 AM until 6:00 PM. There will be free inflatables again provided by Old National Bank at the kid zone from 10:00 AM until 7:00 PM. Velvet Rode Band performs from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM. The Mt. Vernon River Days ends at 8:00 PM Saturday night.

Sports:

A couple of Mt. Vernon athletes are in the running for the weekly courier and press awards. Mt. Vernon’s Nash Hostetter is up for the Courier and Press Football Player of the Week award after he had 10 catches for 258 yards and 4 touchdowns this past Friday in the Wildcats win over Pike Central.

Mt. Vernon’s Ella Spoon is up for the Evansville Courier and Press Fall Athlete of the Week award after she had 6 goals and 2 assists against Boonville and Tell City last week.

Coming up tonight in local high school sports…North Posey Volleyball plays host to Mt. Vernon. The JV match is at 6:00 PM and the Varsity match will follow around 7:30 PM. North Posey Boys Soccer is home against Boonville at 5:30 and Vikings Girls Soccer travels to Boonville at 5:30 PM. North Posey Boys Tennis is at home taking on South Spencer at 5:00 PM.

Mt. Vernon Girls Golf takes on Signature School on the road at 4:00 PM.
