A Mount Vernon woman will now serve time in prison after a child neglect conviction. 30-year-old Samantha Burris pleaded guilty on August 15th to neglect of a dependent resulting in bodily injury. Burris appeared in Posey County Court on Monday according to Posey County Prosecuting Attorney Thomas Clowers. Burris and Richard Kennedy were arrested back in October of 2018 after 14-month-old Nyla Brantley died from head injuries while they were babysitting. Kennedy pled guilty in February to neglect of a dependent resulting in death and is serving his sentence of 30 years in prison. Burris was sentenced to 16 years in prison for Neglect of a Dependent Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, a Level 3 Felony. As part of her guilty plea, Burris admitted that she placed the child in a situation that “endangered her life” by failing to not only appropriately supervise the child but also failing to seek medical care.
