National Teen Driver Safety Week is a vital reminder that traffic accidents remain a leading cause of death for teens aged 15 to 18. In 2022, over 800 teen drivers nationwide lost their lives in crashes, and Posey County law enforcement is urging young drivers to stay focused behind the wheel. According to Posey County’s Chief Deputy Sheriff Jeremy Fortune, distracted driving is one of the most significant risks for teen drivers. Cell phone use has led to numerous accidents in the area. In rural Posey County, deer-related accidents are also common, particularly at night when drivers are more likely to be distracted by their phones. Drowsy driving, particularly with late-night road construction, is another danger. While Posey County has not seen many severe crashes recently, Fortune stresses the importance of ongoing conversations between parents and teens about safe driving practices. As National Teen Driver Safety Week begins, Posey County officials encourage parents to remind their teens to stay alert, focused, and safe behind the wheel.
