The state of Indiana is offering an exciting new Attainable Homeownership Tax Credit (AHTC) to Indiana taxpayers who make a donation to Habitat for Humanity of Evansville. Thanks to this tax credit, individuals, couples and businesses can receive a 50% credit on their state taxes for all contributions up to $20,000. For example, a $20,000 donation to Habitat will result in a $10,000 tax credit. The AHTC program will continue until January 1, 2030, which means Indiana taxpayers can take advantage of this tax credit each of the next five years. However, there are only a certain number of credits available each year and those will be awarded on first-come, first-served basis. Anyone interested in taking advantage of this opportunity must complete a donor contribution form and make their gift payable to Habitat for Humanity of Indiana, who will process the gift and send it to Habitat for Humanity of Evansville. For more information about how to receive this tax credit, visit evansvillehabitat.org.

The University of Evansville has received a $5.3 million estate gift from a long-time donor and friend of the university. The donation comes from Melvin M. Peterson, which brings his total giving to UE to $9,639,490. Authorities say Peterson’s gift provides $1 million for an endowed faculty chair and $100,000 for a scholarship in the Department of English. They also say the gift will grow the University’s endowment and support the institution’s academic infrastructure. Officials say Peterson’s first gift to UE was a $1,000 donation to Harlaxton in 1980 which began his 44-year relationship with UE. Peterson reportedly passed away on April 3 at the age of 101, but UE says this contribution has continued his legacy of generosity. UE’s President Chris Pietruszkiewicz says Peterson has given many generous contributions to the university.
