A new inclusive playground and park broke ground over the weekend in Mount Vernon. Avery's Place Playground will be the first inclusive playground built in Posey County and will be designed for all children, including those with disabilities. The playground will honor the life and memory of Avery Beste, who passed away in 2008, at the age of 18. The new playground will include smooth surfaces, ramps, transfer stations, specialized seating, high-back swings, musical elements, education play panels, shade and much more. It will be located in the city's new Phillip H. Hagemann Park, which will be located adjacent to and eventually connect with Brittlebank Park. Construction on Phase 1 of the new park and the playground officially broke ground this past Saturday. Construction on the new playground, walking trails and parking lot is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Future phases and projects will be completed over the coming years. The new park will be managed by the Mt. Vernon Parks and Recreation Department. Avery's Place Committee has created a legacy fund for future repair and maintenance of the playground.
