The weather brought on by the arctic blast is continuing to cause problems throughout the area. With many trees down from the original ice and temperatures dropping, it is unknown how much more damage will come. As of 10PM on Monday evening, Centerpoint Engergy's outage map showed roughly 1600 outages causing roughly 33,000 customers to still be without power. This is down from over 60,000 original customers affected.
With many areas still without power and poor road conditions, the Indiana State Police wants to remind the public that many traffic signal across Southern Indiana many not be functioning properly or in some cases at all. Any non operational signal are to be treated as 4-way stops and should be approached with caution.
The Posey County Emergency Management Agency has worked with local organizations and the American Red Cross to open shelters and warming centers throughout the county. If you are in need of shelter, they ask that you contact the Posey County Dispatch office via telephone at 812-838-1320. Some shelters that were open as Monday include: The First Christian Church at 1403 County Club Road in Mount Vernon, Saint Phillips Church at 3500 St Phillips Road, The Poseyville Community Center at 60 North Church Street. There are several warming shelters open as well. Those include the Mount Vernon Fire Department, Black Township Fire Department, The Posey County EMA Garage, The Wadesville Fire Department and New Harmony Fire Department.
As for the power outages, crews are working hard to restore power across the entire tri-state area. Any Centerpoint Energy Customer who has not reported an outage can do so by calling 1-800-227-1376. As power is restored, be aware of you local area power lines and poles as trees and debris might still be on the poles or lines. If you encounter any fires or arcing, please report to Centerpoint at 1-800-227-1376 or call the local dispatch office at 911.
