Posey County Emergency Management says that due to the lack of rain in the county, the burn ban for Posey County has been extended until September 17th. The burn ban has been in effect since August 27th. If the ban is lifted before then, Posey County Emergency Management says they will post it on their Facebook page. The September Tox-away day is today from 2:00 PM until 6:00 PM at the Mt. Vernon Recycling Center. This is a chance to properly dispose of old household chemicals such as pesticides, cleaners, non-latex paint, non- alkaline batteries, etc. If you need more information, you can contact the district at 812-838-1613.

 

The University of Southern Indiana has unveiled a new Literacy Center in Rice Library. The new area, intended to be a flexible and interactive learning space, will focus on broadening clinical experiences in reading instruction for teacher education students. It’s the only one of its kind in Indiana, thanks to a $1 million Lilly Endowment Grant. They also have a special A.I. simulated classroom that helps students practice their lessons and help them with their skills in giving reading lessons.

 

Sports: 

Last night in local high school sports…Mt. Vernon Boys Soccer got beat by South Knox at home, 6-0. The Wildcats are now 3-4 on the season. North Posey Boys Tennis picked up a 4-1 victory at Southridge. The Vikings improve to 6-3 on the year and 4-1 in the PAC.

 

Coming up tonight in local high school sports…Mt. Vernon Volleyball is home against Reitz. The JV match is at 6:00 PM and the Varsity match follows around 7:30 PM. Wildcats Boys Tennis is on the road at Gibson Southern at 4:45 PM. Mt. Vernon Girls Golf is home taking on Mt. Carmel and Princeton at 4:30 PM. Mt. Vernon Cross Country runs in an Invitational at Gibson Southern at 5:00 PM.

North Posey Volleyball travels to Heritage Hills. The JV match starts at 5:30 PM and the Varsity match will be around 7:00 PM. Vikings Boys Soccer journeys to Wood Memorial at 5:00 PM. North Posey Cross Country is also running in an Invitational at Gibson Southern at 5:00 PM.

 

The St. Louis Cardinals won the series finale in Milwaukee last night, 3-2 in 10 innings. Luken Baker delivered the RBI single with 2 outs in the Top of the 10th inning. It’s back-to-back extra inning wins for the Cardinals, as they take 2-of-3 against the Brewers. St. Louis improves to 71-69. The Redbirds are off today, before returning home on Friday for a 3-game weekend series with the Seattle Mariners.

The Chicago Cubs took the finale of their 3-game set at home with the Pittsburgh Pirates, 12-0. Chicago threw a combined no-hitter, using 3 different pitchers. It’s the first Cubs no-hitter at Wrigley Field since 1972. The Cubbies avoid the 3-game sweep from the Bucco’s and now have a record of 72-68. Chicago will enjoy this Thursday off, before they entertain the New York Yankees for a 3-game weekend series at home. That series will start Friday afternoon.  

The Cincinnati Reds used a big 9-run first inning to smack the Houston Astros at home, 12-5. The Reds are now 67-73 on the season. Cincy goes for the 3-game sweep today at 12:10 PM.
