Posey County Board of Commissioners announced on Tuesday that the current burn ban for Posey County will be extended through October 1st. Posey is one of many counties in southwestern Indiana and western Kentucky that has prohibited open burning during the current drought. According to the signed declaration by the board members, all nine established fire departments in Posey County requested the ban to be extended.  If any person violates the Declaration, they would be in violation of a Class B Misdemeanor, which could include fines and/or imprisonment pursuant to law.

 

University of Southern Indiana school officials announced that Indiana students will be able to submit their undergraduate admission applications for free from September 22nd-27th. According to a press release, this is in conjunction will the College GO! campaign sponsored by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education. School officials say students should apply by midnight on September 27th to ensure the fee is waived. They say in addition to consideration for acceptance, applicants will also receive consideration for merit-based scholarships.

 

The West Side Nut Club Fall Festival has once again been named the Best Fall Festival by USA Today in their 2024 Reader's Choice Awards. For the second consecutive year they have earned top honors. Attracting over 200,000 visitors during its weeklong run, the Fall Festival stands as one of the largest street festivals in the United States and last year included the nation’s largest half pot which surpassed $1.8 million. This year’s festival will take place from October 7th-12th.

 

Week 5 of the high school football regular season is tomorrow night, and the 3-1 Mt. Vernon Wildcats will try to make it 4-straight wins as they play at Forest Park at 6:30 PM. The Rangers also have a 3-1 record. Chris Cooke and Allen Buck will have the radio broadcast tomorrow night on 106.7 FM WMVI and online at poseycountyradio.com.

The 4-0 North Posey Vikings welcome the Heritage Hills Patriots tomorrow evening for a big PAC battle at 7:00 PM. The Patriots sit at 3-1 on the season. Jordan Fisher and Chris Morlan will have you covered on the radio on 98.9 FM WPIW and online at poseycountyradio.com.

The North Posey Vikings are ranked 3rd in Class 2A in this week’s Indiana Football Coaches Association Poll. In Class 5A, Castle in 10th. Class 4A has Reitz 2nd. Several tri-state teams are ranked in Class 3A with Memorial 1st, Heritage Hills 2nd, Gibson Southern 3rd, Mater Dei 8th, and Southridge 12th.

 

Sports:

Last night in local high school sports…North Posey Tennis was able to pull out a 3-2 win at Mater Dei. The Vikings improve to 10-4 on the season.

 

Coming up this evening in local high school sports…Mt. Vernon Volleyball is home against Princeton, with the JV match at 5:30 PM and the Varsity match at 7:00 PM. Wildcats Boys Soccer plays host to Harrison at 5:30 PM. Mt. Vernon Girls Soccer is on the road at Pike Central at 5:30 PM. Mt. Vernon Boys Tennis travels to Reitz at 4:15 PM. Wildcats Girls Golf is also at Reitz at 4:00 PM.

North Posey Volleyball heads to South Spencer. The JV match is at 5:30 PM and the Varsity match will follow at 7:00 PM. Vikings Boys Tennis welcomes Forest Park at 4:30 PM. North Posey Girls Soccer hits the road to square off with Southridge at 5:00 PM.

 

The St. Louis Cardinals won their 3rd-straight game last night as they beat the Pittsburgh Pirates at home, 10-6. The Cardinals improve to 77-75 and go for the 4-game sweep of the Pirates tonight in St. Louis at 6:15 PM.

The Chicago Cubs got beat at home in their series finale with the Oakland Athletics, 5-3. The Cubs slip to 77-75 overall and will start a 4-game series in Chicago this evening against the Washington Nationals at 6:40 PM.

The Cincinnati Reds lost at home in the middle game of their 3-game set last night against the Atlanta Braves, 7-1. Cincy is now 74-79 on the year. The Reds and Braves finish up their series today at 12:10 PM.
