Tomorrow night is Week 4 of the High School Football season across the tri-state area. In Posey County, the Mt. Vernon Wildcats welcome the Washington Hatches at 6:30 PM. The Wildcats are 2-1 on the year and the Hatchets are 3-0. The North Posey Vikings will be on the road to battle the Tell City Marksmen tomorrow evening at 7:00 PM. Both teams are a perfect 3-0 on the season.

Earlier in the week, the updated Indiana Football Coaches Association rankings were released, and several tri-state teams are receiving recognition. The North Posey Vikings are ranked 3rd in Class 2A. In Class 5A, Castle is 10th. In Class 4A, Reitz is ranked 3rd. There are numerous tri-state teams ranked in Class 3A with Memorial at the top ranked 1st, Gibson Southern is 2nd, Heritage Hills 3rd, and Southridge is 15th.

 

The nursing school at the University of Southern Indiana is now the Kinney College of Nursing and Health Professions. Officials announced the new name Wednesday. Interim President Steve Bridges was among those who made remarks. He says the change is to thank USI alumnus Wayne Kinney and his family after they donated $6 million to the university. Officials plan to use the money for student scholarships, new equipment, and upgrades.

 

September is National College Savings Month, and Governor Eric Holcomb has highlighted the importance of saving for education. He has proclaimed September 2024 as College Savings Month in Indiana. To celebrate, one person will be selected to win a $10,000 account deposit in the Indiana529 Education Sweepstakes. You must be at least 18, and you have until 11:59 p.m. on September 30. The winner will be randomly selected from all eligible entries to receive a $10,000 Indiana529 account deposit.

 

Mt. Vernon River Day is this Friday and Saturday. Tomorrow’s events begin at 11:00 AM with the opening ceremony and day one concludes with Fireworks at 9:00 PM. Day two on Saturday gets underway at 8:00 AM with the 5K Run and the day wraps up at 8:00 PM. For a full list of events, you can visit the Mt. Vernon River Days Facebook page. There is some concern about the weather this weekend. Organizers of Mt. Vernon River Days say they can’t reschedule the festival, and the show must go on. They say they are working with the Emergency Management folks that if there are severe weather conditions on the way, they will be notified. Mt. Vernon River Days will have shelter available if necessary. In the case of inclement weather and there are postponements or cancellations of any events, it will be announced over the sound system at River Days and posted on Facebook.

 

Sports: 

Last night in local high school sports…North Posey Volleyball lost at home in 4-sets to North. The loss drops the Lady Vikings to 10-4 on the season. North Posey Boys Tennis got beat 4-1 at Tecumseh. Vikings Boys Tennis falls to 8-4 overall and 6-2 in the PAC. Mt. Vernon Boys Tennis lost 5-0 at Mater Dei.

 

Coming up this evening in local high school sports…North Posey Volleyball plays for a 3rd-straight night as they head to Reitz. The JV match will begin at 5:30 PM and the Varsity match will follow around 7:00 PM. Vikings Boys Soccer travels to Pike Central for a 5:00 PM match.

Mt. Vernon Boys Soccer is home against Gibson Southern at 5:30 PM. Wildcats Girls Soccer plays at South Spencer at 6:00 PM. Mt. Vernon Boys Tennis welcomes Bosse for a 4:15 PM match.

 

The St. Louis Cardinals scratched out a 2-1 win at home last night against the Cincinnati Reds. Paul Goldschmidt delivered the go-ahead RBI double in the 8th inning to break a 1-1 tie. The Cardinals improve to 73-72 and the Reds fall to 71-76. St. Louis and Cincinnati have split the first two games and finish up the series today at Busch Stadium at 12:15 PM.
