Officials are preparing for a commemoration ceremony this weekend in Mount Vernon honoring the victims of lynchings that took place in 1878. This Saturday is the one-year anniversary of a project put together by former Mount Vernon High School Student, Sophie Kloppenburg. The project was a memorial bench and historical marker commemorating the scene of seven African American lynchings in Posey County in 1878. The project was a collaboration with the USI College of Liberal Arts Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee. The one-year anniversary event will take place Saturday, October 21, at Alexandrian Public Library in Mount Vernon where there will be speakers at 10:00 AM and the commemoration ceremony will take place at 6:00 PM.

 

Sign up by midnight tonight for the United Way of Posey County Pajamas All Day 5K/Walk Run and Kids Dash. Individuals that register for the 5K by midnight tonight will receive a t-shirt and goodie bag. Packet pick up on race day will be at the park located at Main and Sixth Streets in Mt. Vernon. This event will raise money to support United Way of Posey County agencies and the programs within Posey County in relation to health, financial security, and education. The event is Saturday, November 4th, with the race starting at 8:00 AM and the Kid’s Dash following at 9:15 AM.

 

The annual Poseyville Kiwanis Club’s Punt, Pass, & Kick competition will be Saturday, October 21 at 9 a.m. at North Posey High School. This competition is open to anyone who will be 8-12 years old as of December 31, 2023. There is no cost to participate. Prizes will be handed out.

 

North Posey Volleyball plays in the Class 2A Regional at Mitchell High School this Saturday. The Vikings, who are 28-6 on the season will play Linton Stockton who is 29-4 on the year at 10:00 AM on Saturday. If North Posey wins that match, they will play the winner of Brownstown Central and South Ripley at 6:00 PM Saturday night. You will be able to hear the Vikings Volleyball Regional match on the radio on 98.9 FM WPIW and online at poseycountyradio.com.

 

Tomorrow night postseason football gets underway for High School teams across the tri-state with the first round of sectionals. The North Posey Vikings play at Perry Central tomorrow evening at 7:00 PM. North Posey is 8-1 and Perry Central is 5-4.

The Mt. Vernon Wildcats Football team will have to travel to Gibson Southern tomorrow night at 7:00 PM. The Wildcats finished the regular season with a 5-4 record. The Titans went 7-2.

The final regular season High School Football AP rankings were released this week. In Class 5A, Castle is 10th and North is 13th. Class 4A has Reitz 2nd, Jasper 14th, and Memorial 15th. In Class 3A, Gibson Southern is 6th, Heritage Hills 7th, and Vincennes 13th. Class 2A features the North Posey Vikings ranked 4th.

 

College Basketball season is just about here and earlier this week, a few preseason conference rankings were released. In the Missouri Valley Conference, the Evansville Purple Aces men’s team was picked to finish 11th in the 12-team conference. In the Ohio Valley Conference, USI Men’s Basketball was slated 9th in the 11-team conference.
