Fire crews spent more than 14 hours on the scene of a two-alarm fire in downtown Evansville on Wednesday. It was at the old Pearl Cleaners building on Northwest 3rd Street. Officials say someone driving by called in the fire before 2:00 AM. They say CenterPoint Energy came out to the area to shut off the power to more than 100 customers. Power has been restored everywhere except at the scene of the fire. Evansville Division Chief Mike Larson says crews took a defensive approach to the fire, meaning no firefighters went inside the building. Instead, they focused on containing the fire and limiting its spread. Larson says the fire was contained after about an hour and a half. He says the fire was considered “out” around 8:00 AM. After the fire was out, fire crews continued to put fire on hot spots until around 4 p.m., making sure the fire didn’t rekindle. Larson says he wouldn’t be surprised if some spots of the building rekindle over the next few days. That Pearl Dry Cleaners location had been in business for more than 100 years when it closed in 2017. An investigation is underway into what started the fire. The Indiana State Fire Marshal was on scene Wednesday, assisting crews. Officials say NW 3rd Street heading into downtown will remain closed today.
Under a new state law, you could be placed under arrest if you’re standing less than 25 feet away from a police investigation. House Enrolled Act 1186 gives police a 25-foot buffer to perform any of their duties. If a member of the public is asked to provide that distance and doesn’t comply, they can be charged with a Class C misdemeanor, which is punishable by up to 60 days in jail and a fine of up to $500. Indiana is among the first states to pass such a law. Law enforcement officials say the law won’t apply to all situations as officers will use discretion. The legislation is under review by attorneys at the ACLU of Indiana, which argues it hampers the public’s ability to hold police accountable. Members of law enforcement deny that the law limits transparency. The law takes effect July 1st.
