The National Weather Service announced that the tornado that moved through Mt. Vernon on Tuesday was classified as an EF-3 tornado. NWS officials reported wind speeds up to 140 miles per hour. In an article on 14 News, their Chief Meteorologist Jeff Lyons said that it was the strongest July tornado to ever hit the Tri-State area.

 

Posey County residents who have storm damage to report are being asked to utilize Indiana 211. Officials with the Indiana Department of Homeland Security say community members affected by the storms on Tuesday night should either report damage to Indiana 211 by calling or going online. To help establish a comprehensive assessment of damage, residents can call 866-211-9966 or visit the Indiana 211 website. According to the department, damage reports from residents will help determine damage estimates and develop the next course of action in the disaster recovery process.

 

The American Red Cross is stationed in Mt. Vernon after the Tuesday storms. They set up shop at Mt. Vernon Junior High School and jumped in to help those displaced. Executive Director of the Red Cross of Southwest Indiana Beth Sweeney says the community has made a big difference in efforts so far. Officials say anyone still interested in helping with recovery efforts can call 1-800-RED-CROSS.

 

McKim’s IGA in Mt. Vernon has shared that they will be grilling hot dogs and burgers free of charge today from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM in their parking lot. They say while the food is free, they will be accepting any donations to be donated back to the community in an effort to help those affected by the storms on Tuesday. They encourage the community to take a little break today and stop by from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM and help raise a little money to help the town.

 

There is a public meeting tonight at the Hovey House in Mount Vernon regarding a proposed rezoning that was requested by Marshall Disposal. Marshall has requested that the old “bone yard” previously owned by D.K. Parker Construction be rezoned to allow them to use the property for a waste transfer station. This would be a storage site where waste would be temporarily stored before heading to the landfill. This meeting will take place at 5:00 PM this evening at the Hovey House.

 

The Posey County Solid Waste District says the July Tox-Away Day is taking place today at the Mt. Vernon Recycling Center from 2:00 PM until 6:00 PM. This will be a chance to properly dispose of old household chemicals, pesticides, non-latex paint, non-alkaline batteries, etc. For more information, you can contact the district at 812-838-1613.

 

The University of Southern Indiana has announced that their Women's and Men's Basketball team will host an "Evening with the Eagles," next week. This will be an open summer practice on Wednesday, July 17th at 5:00 PM inside Screaming Eagles Arena. The event is open to the public. Those who attend will get a chance to watch the Screaming Eagles run through their everyday drills and a 10-minute scrimmage by both teams. After the open practice, the two squads will be available for autographs and pictures. Director of Athletics Jon Mark Hall will speak alongside Men's Head Coach Stan Gouard and Women's Head Coach Rick Stein, about the upcoming year. Plus, a few players will speak as well. Not only will there be an informational session about NIL, but attendees will have the opportunity to acquire information or purchase season tickets for the 2024-25 USI Basketball season and take a tour of the USI Basketball facilities and locker rooms.

 

The St. Louis Cardinals lost both games of their day/night doubleheader at home yesterday against the Kansas City Royals. The Redbirds fell in game one, 6-4 and then in game two, 8-5. The Cardinals are now 48-44 on the season. St. Louis is off today and will start a 4-game series at home tomorrow night against the Chicago Cubs.
