After the NCAA Council announced new benchmarks for schools in the reclassification period, the University of Southern Indiana is now one step closer to being fully transitioned to Division I. The NCAA Council has recently announced new criteria for schools in Division II and III to reclassify to Division I. One of the changes reduces the reclassification process, also known as the postseason ban, to three years for Division II schools. Other factors in review include financial aid requirements. In October, USI announced a $10 million gift from Liberty Credit Union for the then-named Screaming Eagles Arena. Officials say the gift will provide much needed support as they continue transitioning to Division I. With academics also being considered, USI led the Ohio Valley Conference in academics during the 2023-2024 school year. If USI fully transitions, teams will be able to not only compete at the Division I level but will also be able to compete in NCAA tournaments.
