Ready or not, the end of summer is right around the corner for teachers and students. Next week starts the new school year for the MSD of Mt. Vernon and the MSD of North Posey. Tonight, at North Posey High School from 6:30 PM until 8:00 PM it is Freshman Orientation. MSD of North Posey teachers return to work on Tuesday, August 6th and Parent Information Night will be from 6:30 PM until 7:30 PM that evening. Then on Wednesday, August 7th it’s the first day of school for MSD of North Posey students.

MSD of Mt. Vernon teachers head back to work on Wednesday, August 7th and the first day for MSD of Mt. Vernon students is Thursday, August 8th.

 

Coming up this weekend is the 34th Annual Keck-Gonnerman Antique Machinery Association Show. It runs tomorrow through Sunday at the Posey County Fairgrounds, which is located at 111 Harmony Township Road in New Harmony. It is free admission. There will be food vendors and a flea market. The Deaconess Mobile Mammogram unit is providing screening mammograms today. No insurance is required for these screenings as the Posey County Health Department will cover the cost for those who need assistance. To schedule a mammogram, call 812-450-6266. If you need financial assistance for the screening, call the Posey County Health Department after your appointment is scheduled at 812-838-1330. The location for the screenings will be the IGA in Mount Vernon today between 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM.

 

Posey County Solid Waste District says today is the August Tox-away day from 2:00 PM until 6:00 PM at the Mt. Vernon Recycling Center. This is a chance to properly dispose of household chemicals such as pesticides, insecticides, pool chemicals, cleaners, non-alkaline batteries, and non-latex paint. This Sunday evening at the Mt. Vernon High School PAC there is a night of worship. The community is invited to join in the worship of Jesus Christ. Doors open at 6:00 PM and the music begins at 6:30 PM.

 

The St. Louis Cardinals earned a series win at home on Wednesday as they hammered the Texas Rangers, 10-1. St. Louis banged out 14 hits and received an outstanding start on the mound from Michael McGreevy in his big-league debut. McGreevy, who was selected in the 1st round back in 2021 by the Cardinals went 7 innings yesterday and allowed 1 run on 5 hits. The Redbirds improve to 56-52 and begin a 4-game series in Chicago tonight with the Cubs at 7:05 PM.

 

The Chicago Cubs avoided a 3-game sweep in Cincinnati yesterday as they whipped the Reds 13-4. The Cubs clobbered 17 hits in the contest. Chicago is now 52-58 and Cincinnati is 52-56. The Cubs are home against the Cardinals tonight at 7:05 PM and the Reds will enjoy the evening off. Cincy will be home tomorrow night to start a weekend series with the San Francisco Giants.
