A 39-year-old man from Evansville spent the weekend in jail after deputies say he was driving drunk Saturday night. Around 7:00 PM, Vanderburgh County Sheriff deputies received a “Be On The Lookout” from Posey County Dispatch advising that a possible drunk driver was heading eastbound on SR 62 from Mt. Vernon. Dispatch told deputies that the driver of a white Chevy pickup truck was previously drinking alcohol at a football game and left with a child. A few minutes later, deputies say they spotted a vehicle matching the description speeding on SR 62 approaching the University Parkway. The driver of the truck was pulled over and identified as Gordon C. Shephard. According to an affidavit, Shephard’s breath had an “overwhelming” odor of alcohol and empty beer cans were in the back of his truck. Additionally, deputies say a child was sitting in the front seat. The sheriff’s office says Shephard fell when he got out of the truck and proceeded to fail several field sobriety tests. Deputies say blew a .162 on a portable breath test, which is two times over the legal limit. The child was picked up by his mother and Shepherd was taken into custody. An affidavit shows a pill bottle without a label containing Hydrocodone pills was later found in the center console of the truck. Shephard was arrested and booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail.
