Posey County deputy Bryan Hicks was honored and recognized in Owensboro Saturday night at the Defending Heroes Project Banquet amid his ongoing recovery after almost losing his life. Deputy Hicks was shot in the line of duty back in September of 2021 after responding to a welfare check. His recovery has been described as a miracle. The Posey County Sheriff’s Office says, “Deputy Hicks and his wife Tammy were recognized for not only the sacrifices they have made, but also for the hard work and dedication they have put into Bryan’s recovery.” The Sheriff’s Office also says thank you to Bryan and that they are very proud to call him one of theirs.

 

A groundbreaking ceremony marked the beginning of construction on a new solar farm in Posey County on Friday. Officials say the new solar project is expected to bring new jobs and an estimated $31 million to the county’s economy. Local leaders hope it will benefit hotels, restaurants, and other local businesses during the construction period. The solar farm is expected to be up and running by mid-2025.

 

The Posey County Health Department says they happy to announce that they are able to provide vaccines for everyone that may require them. Through a partnership with Vaxcare, the health department is able to provide vaccines for those that have insurance coverage as well as those without insurance coverage. Previously the health department only provided vaccines for those with insurance coverage for vaccines, or those on the VFC program. So, if you need vaccines and are not able to get them through your healthcare provider, pharmacies, or other locations…they say to contact the health department to schedule a time to get your vaccines. This includes vaccines for infants, children, adolescents, and adults. To schedule a time for vaccines and to make sure they have in stock the vaccines that you will be needing…you are to call the health department at 812-838-1328.

 

Both Holiday World and Splashin’ Safari opened up this past weekend. Both will be closed today through Thursday for school groups. Then on Friday of this week, both will be open every day for the summer.

 

Coming up this evening in local high school sports…Softball Sectionals get underway. Mt. Vernon Softball will battle Bosse tonight at 7:00 PM in the first round of the Class 3A Sectional 32 at Boonville High School. If the Wildcats win tonight, they will play Princeton tomorrow evening at 7:00 PM.

North Posey Softball does not play tonight as they received a first-round bye in the Class 2A Sectional 48 at Forest Park. The Vikings will play tomorrow night at 7:00 PM against the winner of South Spencer and Perry Central.

 

This past Friday, North Posey Baseball beat Gibson Southern, 7-6 on a walk-off hit from Grant Cullman. The win clinched sole possession of the PAC regular season championship for the Vikings. They ended the regular season with a 21-5 overall record.

 

College Baseball regular season has come to an end and now teams turn their focus to the conference tournament. Over the weekend, the Evansville Purple Aces closed their regular season by winning 2-of-3 against UIC at home. The Aces finished with a 31-23 overall record and a 17-10 mark in the MVC. They will be the #3 Seed in this week’s MVC Tournament hosted by the University of Evansville. UE will play #4 Seed Illinois State on Wednesday morning at 9:00 AM.

USI Baseball swept Western Illinois over the weekend to close their regular season schedule. The Screaming Eagles went 25-30 overall and 14-13 in the OVC. They will be the #4 Seed in this week’s OVC Tournament. USI plays on Wednesday at 4:00 PM against the winner of the Tennessee Tech and UT Martin game. The OVC Tournament is in Marion, Illinois.

 

From the NBA Playoffs…the Indiana Pacers are off to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2014. Indiana went to New York and throttled the Knicks in Game 7 on Sunday, 130-109. Tyrese Haliburton led the Pacers with 26 points, Pascal Siakam, and Andrew Nembhard each poured in 20 points, Aaron Nesmith added 19 points, and Myles Turner chimed in with 17 points. Indiana shot 67 percent from the field and 54 percent from beyond the three-point arc. The sixth seeded Pacers now get the number one seed Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals. Game one is in Boston tomorrow night at 7:00 PM.

 

In Major League Baseball from Sunday…the St. Louis Cardinals failed to complete a three-game sweep at home against the Boston Red Sox as Boston won the finale, 11-3. The Cardinals are now 20-26 on the year and they start a three-game series at home tonight with the Baltimore Orioles at 6:45 PM.

The Chicago Cubs lost at home to the Pittsburgh Pirates, 3-2. Chicago lost 3-of-4 to the Bucco’s as the Cubs dropped to 26-22 on the season. The Cubbies will have tonight off before hosting the Atlanta Braves in a three-game series on Tuesday at 6:40 PM.

The Cincinnati Reds lost a tough game 3-2 in 10 innings against the Dodgers out in Los Angeles on Sunday. The Reds lost 3-of-4 in the series and went just 3-7 on their 10-game west-coast road swing. Cincy is now 19-28 on the year. The Reds are off tonight before they welcome San Diego tomorrow evening at 5:40 PM.
