The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office and USI are taking measures to improve interactions with deaf and hard-of-hearing drivers. According to a release, deaf and hard-of-hearing residents are invited to stop by the sheriff’s office or the USI Office of Disability Resources to pick up a communication card to display in their vehicles. The cards are designed to help improve communication between officers and people who are deaf or hard of hearing. Officials say the goal is to prevent misunderstandings during those interactions. The communication card should be stored above the visor of the vehicle, allowing for easy access should the driver be involved in a traffic stop. Officials say the card’s location is critical since this allows officers to always see the driver’s hands. This all follows after organizers received feedback from the Deaf community, which they say faces significant communication challenges during police encounters. For more information or to get a communication visor card, you can visit the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office or the USI Office of Disability Resources.
