Last week, Mt. Vernon Police arrested a Mt. Vernon man for possession of drugs and a stolen firearm from Evansville. On Wednesday April 10th, an officer was patrolling the Mt. Vernon riverfront when they came across a parked SUV with multiple occupants inside. When the offer began to speak to the individuals, he could smell the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a backpack that had a THC vape along with a Glock 19 pistol that was originally at the feet of one of passengers, Joshua Hargett. Officers checked the serial number of the handgun and discovered that it was stolen. After being read his Miranda rights, Hargett admitted the backpack was his. Hargett further stated he purchased the pistol at a party in Henderson from an individual in which he claims to only know his first name. Hargett was arrested and transported to the Posey County Jail.
The Evansville Thunderbolts are offering a free game to the public this week in an effort to #FillTheFord. Officials say all tickets to their playoff game this Wednesday, April 17th against the Peoria Rivermen are free. All you need to do is walk into the Ford Center and find a seat. The puck drops at 7:00 PM.
The University of Kentucky officially introduced new head coach Mark Pope Sunday afternoon at Rupp Arena. Big crowds showed up to welcome the Wildcat alum and national champion back to the school. Pope spent the past five seasons as the head coach at BYU. At the press conference Sunday, Pope held up his own jersey from the 1996 National Championship game. Pope spoke to the crowd about bringing more banners to Rupp Arena, for both SEC tournaments, Final Fours and National Championships.

Local sports from Sunday…in college baseball…Evansville finished off a 3-game sweep of Illinois State with a 13-1 win in 7 innings. The Purple Aces hit 4 home runs in the win. They have won 8 of their last 9 games to improve to 18-17 and 7-5 in the MVC. UE is now in a 4-way tie for 2nd place in the conference. The Aces will play IU tomorrow night at 5:00 PM.
USI Baseball fell in their series finale at SEMO, 12-2 as the Screaming Eagles drop 2-of-3 in the weekend series. USI is now 15-21 overall and 5-7 in the OVC. They will be home tomorrow night against the Tops of WKU at 6:00 PM.
From Major League Baseball…the St. Louis Cardinals got blanked in Arizona by the D-Backs, 5-0. St. Louis lost 2-of-3 in the series as they fall to 7-9 on the young season. The Redbirds head to Oakland this evening to start a 3-game set with Athletics at 8:40 PM.
The Chicago Cubs earned a series win in Seattle as they beat the Mariners, 3-2. The Cubs run their record to 9-6 and stay on the west coast to start a series in Arizona against the D-Backs tonight at 8:40 PM.
The Cincinnati Reds completed a 3-game sweep in Chicago against the White Sox with an 11-4 thumping. The Reds are now 9-6 and will be in Seattle this evening to get a series underway with the Mariners at 8:40 PM. The White Sox are a horrendous 2-13 and will welcome the Kansas City Royals to town tonight at 6:40 PM.
From the NBA…the final day of the regular season was yesterday, and the Indiana Pacers clinched the 6 seed and avoided the play-in tournament with a convincing 157-115 win at home over the Atlanta Hawks. Myler Turner had 31 points and 12 rebounds, Pascal Siakam added 28 points, and Tyrese Haliburton chimed in with 12 points and 13 assists. Indiana finishes with a 47-35 record and will face the #3 seed Milwaukee Bucks in the first round of the playoffs that will start this weekend.
