An Alabama man is facing drug dealing charges after Posey County deputies say they found 800 pounds of marijuana and synthetic marijuana in his van. According to authorities, they were called to assist 69-year-old Clarance Shipman just before 12:30 AM Saturday morning. He was stranded on Interstate 64 at the 4-mile marker. Deputies say after an investigation; they found the marijuana in several trash bags in the cargo bay of the van. They say it was loosely packed in trash bags and was being transported from Los Angeles to North Carolina. Authorities say the marijuana is worth around 1 million dollars. Shipman was taken to the Posey County Jail where he is charged with Felony Dealing Marijuana.

 

Indiana Governor Mike Braun has declared a state of disaster emergency for 18 counties in Indiana, including Posey County. The counties under the disaster emergency declaration in our area include Posey, Gibson, Warrick, Perry, and Spencer. The emergency declaration was declared due to continued severe weather around the state and will be in effect for 30 days. Braun says, "It is my hope that this step enables residents, businesses, and local government to access needed resources and assistance as they assess and recover from these devastating weather events.”

 

AT&T is contributing $25,000 to SWIRCA & More to support digital literacy training for older adults in Posey County, Indiana. The funding will support training sessions from April through August, aimed at helping seniors build essential technology skills.

The scheduled topics are:

  • May 8th: Social Media and Online Communications
  • June 12th: Cell Phones, iPads, and Smart Devices
  • July 10th: Email and Web Browsing
  • August 14th: Online Safety and Netiquette

This initiative is part of AT&T’s broader commitment to bridge the digital divide and help 25 million people connect to high-speed internet by 2030.

From local college sports over the weekend, USI Baseball went into the weekend in first place in the Ohio Valley Conference but fell out of first place as they were swept at Tennessee Tech in a 3-game series. The Screaming Eagles lost on Friday, 11-6…Saturday, 8-6…and Sunday, 13-3. They have now lost 4-straight games as the drop to 16-19 overall and 7-5 in the OVC.

It was also a rough weekend for Evansville Baseball as they lost all 3 games at Illinois State. The Purple Aces got beat on Friday, 17-8…Saturday, 7-1….and Sunday, 14-4. UE has lost 5-straight games as they slide to 11-24 on the season and 5-7 in the Missouri Valley Conference.

 

Major League Baseball action from Sunday saw the St. Louis Cardinals blank the Philadelphia Phillies at home, 7-0. The Cardinals took 2-of-3 in the series and improve to 7-8 on the year. St. Louis starts a 3-game set at home with the Houston Astros tonight at 6:45 PM.

The Chicago Cubs won on Sunday Night Baseball as they took down the Dodgers in Los Angeles, 4-2. Chicago won 2-of-3 over the weekend. They sit at 11-7 and will now head to San Diego for a 3-game series against the Padres at 8:40 PM.

The Cincinnati Reds completed a 3-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates at home, 4-0. The Reds are back to 500 on the season at 8-8. Cincinnati is off today and will get a 3-game series underway at home with the Seattle Mariners tomorrow evening.

 

In the NBA from yesterday…the Indiana Pacers closed their regular season with a 126-118 double overtime win at the Cleveland Cavaliers. Indiana rested a lot of their main players as they had their playoff spot already locked up. The Pacers were led by Quenton Jackson who scored 21 points and Tony Bradley had a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Indiana finished with a 50-32 record. It’s the first time since the 2013-2014 season that they won 50 games. The Pacers are the #4 seed in the Eastern Conference Playoffs and will play the #5 seed Milwaukee Bucks in the first round in a best-of-7 series.
