A driver was arrested on charges of meth possession and operating while intoxicated after nearly crashing into a police cruiser in Mount Vernon. A Mount Vernon police officer patrolling near Highway 62 and Leonard Road around 6:00 AM. Tuesday said they had to brake quickly when Keyton Whitney pulled out in front of them. When the officer stopped Whitney, they said they noticed signs of marijuana use. According to MVPD, Keyton admitted to smoking marijuana in his truck just prior to driving to work that morning. During a search of the vehicle, officers say they found marijuana. Whitney was arrested and taken to they Posey County Jail. Before being scanned at the jail, Whitney admitted to having a pipe hidden in his pants, which tested positive for methamphetamine. Police said that Whitney's charges were enhanced due to bringing the illegal item into the jail.

 

Construction plans are moving forward for the Philip H. Hagemann Event Center in Mt. Vernon, a 27,000-square-foot facility designed for community events and youth programs. The space will include a large event hall, which can be divided into two smaller halls, along with classrooms, hospitality suites, offices, and a catering kitchen. A separate youth services area will feature game rooms, conference space, and administrative offices. The center will also include 241 parking spaces and a covered entryway. Contractors interested in bidding can access documents starting March 17th, with bids due by April 14th. A pre-bid meeting is set for March 19th at City Hall.

Both Mount Vernon and North Posey High School will have some entertainment to enjoy this weekend. The Mount Vernon Performing Arts will be presenting Anastasia coming up tonight and Saturday at 7:00 PM. They will also have a 2:00 PM showing on Saturday. Adult tickets are available for $12 and student tickets for $8. And The North Posey Theater Department is presenting Legally Blonde the Musical as well. That will take place tonight and Saturday at 7:00 PM. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. More details are available for both presentations on our Posey County Radio Facebook page.

 

This evening, the Knights of St. John is hosting their annual Fish Fry in St. Wendel. Dinner will be served from 5:00-7:00 PM and there will be dine-in and drive-thru options. The menu consists of Fried Fish, Potato Salad, Cole Slaw, Baked Beans, Macaroni and Cheese, Cornbread, and Drinks. The cost is 6 dollars for children and 13 dollars for adults. After the dinner portion, music and dancing is from 7:00-11:00 PM.

 

The Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament tipped off yesterday in downtown Evansville at Ford Center with four 1st Round games. The Evansville Purple Aces Women’s team lost their 1st Round game last night against Illinois Chicago, 72-62 as UE’s season ends. The tournament continues with four Quarterfinal games today, two Semi-Final contests on Saturday, and the Championship game is Sunday afternoon.

 

In the Big Ten Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament up in Indianapolis on the Thursday, the Indiana Hoosiers lost to Oregon, 72-59. The Hoosiers are 19-13 and are considered a bubble team for the NCAA Tournament and will have to wait until Sunday to see if that will get to play in the Big Dance.

Illinois won in a shootout against Iowa, 106-94. The Fighting Illini are 22-11 and play Maryland tonight at 5:30 PM.

Purdue clipped USC, 76-71. The Boilermakers run their record to 22-10. They will battle Michigan this evening around 8:00 PM.

 

From the NBA tonight, the Indiana Pacers begin a 3-game roadie in Philadelphia against the 76ers at 6:00 PM. The Pacers have a record of 36-28.
