The National Weather Service has confirmed at least six tornadoes hit the Tri-State on Tuesday. The first tornado to hit was near Grove Center in Union County. Officials say this was an EF-1 with 105 mph winds. As the storm moved north, NWS officials say it spawned a second tornado between Morganfield and Uniontown. That tornado was also an EF-1 with 100 mph winds. The storms continued north, where the strongest tornado of the day appeared. NWS says that tornado hit Mt. Vernon and was an EF-3 with 140 mph winds. As the storm kept going north, it spawned an EF-1 near Springfield, and EF-2 near Poseyville. The last confirmed tornado was an EF-1 in Gibson County near Patoka. Officials say thankfully no one was hurt during the storms.

 

Posey County residents who have storm damage to report are being asked to utilize Indiana 211. Officials with the Indiana Department of Homeland Security say community members affected by the storms on Tuesday night should either report damage to Indiana 211 by calling or going online. To help establish a comprehensive assessment of damage, residents can call 866-211-9966 or visit the Indiana 211 website. According to the department, damage reports from residents will help determine damage estimates and develop the next course of action in the disaster recovery process.

 

The American Red Cross is stationed in Mt. Vernon after the Tuesday storms. They set up shop at Mt. Vernon Junior High School and jumped in to help those displaced. Executive Director of the Red Cross of Southwest Indiana Beth Sweeney says the community has made a big difference in efforts so far. Officials say anyone still interested in helping with recovery efforts can call 1-800-RED-CROSS. Several community businesses have stepped up and provided meals though at least this Sunday evening for the families that are sheltering at Mt. Vernon Junior High School.

 

A health education center has received a big grant to continue equipping forensic nurses. According to officials with the University of Southern Indiana, who hosts the Southwest Indiana Area Health Education Center, the program will receive $1.49 million in federal funding distributed over the next three years from the Health Resources and Services Administration. This will be to continue the Indiana SANE Training Project. The project provides education statewide to increase the number of forensic nurses, also known as sexual assault nurse examiners. The project specifically focuses on rural and medically underserved communities.

 

The St. Louis Cardinals had Thursday off and will resume play this evening as they begin a 4-game series at home against the Chicago Cubs at 7:15 PM. The Cardinals are 48-44 on the season.

The Chicago Cubs completed a 3-game sweep in Baltimore last night as they handled the Orioles easily, 8-0. Chicago improves to 45-49 on the year.

The Cincinnati Reds finished off their series at home against the Rockies with an easy 8-1 win. Cincy took 3-of-4 in the series and the Reds improve to 45-49 on the season. The Redlegs welcome the Miami Marlins tonight for the first of three at 6:10 PM.
