A criminal from Crete, Illinois, will be spending some time in prison after driving drunk through a school zone. Jerome D. Abernathy, 34, was sentenced to 15 months in prison after pleading guilty to “Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated”, “Reckless Driving” and “Speeding in a School Zone”, according to the Posey County Prosecutor’s Office. Abernathy admitted to driving 81 mph in a 45-mph school zone while intoxicated last August. Abernathy also reportedly admitted to having a prior conviction in 2019 for drunk driving in Henderson County. Officers say the suspect was pulled over near Marrs Elementary School in Mt. Vernon after speeding through the area. According to police, Abernathy failed the field sobriety test.

Deputy Brendon Schmitt of the Posey County Sheriff's department was presented with a life saving award on Wednesday during the deputy meeting. Deputy Schmitt responded to a non-responsive driver who had come to a stop on the median of SR 62 near Ford Rd, on October 9th. Deputy Schmitt began chest compressions after removing the driver from the vehicle and observing there was no pulse. He also used his issued AED device during the incident. The driver regained a pulse and was transported to the hospital. Other first responders assisted in the life saving efforts.

 

A Posey County EMS event that is coming up for the public will be the Car Seat Safety Check Event and Lead Testing.  This event is scheduled for Saturday, January 20th at the New Harmony Fire Department at 400 Fairgrounds Road.  The event will take place in a pull-through bay to help the public stay warm.  Car seats will be checked for proper installation and lead testing will be available for kids via a finger stick.  Lead testing is recommended for children at their one- and two-year checkups but can be done for kids 3-6 as well.  More information on this event on January 20th can be found by calling 812-781-0330 as well.

 

Local college sports from last night…USI Men’s Basketball lost a tough one at SIU Edwardsville, 67-64. It’s now back-to-back losses for the Screaming Eagles are they dip to 5-13 on the season and 2-3 in the OVC.

USI Women’s Basketball drilled SIU Edwardsville on the road, 87-64. It’s the Screaming Eagles 6th-straight win as they improve to 10-5 and 5-0 in the OVC.

 

Today is the Indiana High School Girls Wrestling's State Finals in Kokomo.  Weigh Ins will start at 9 AM central and the Wrestling matches at 10 AM.  Posey County will be well represented with North Posey sending three wrestlers.  Those include Kenna Kleinschmidt, Lydia Justus and Ady Gamblin.  Mount Vernon will be sending four wrestlers. Those are Taylor Mason, Maddy McCarty, Cammie Ritchie and last year’s 170-pound State Champion, Hanna West.

 

Coming up this evening in High School Boys Basketball…the Mt. Vernon Wildcats are on the road to play Southridge at 6:30 PM. The Wildcats are hoping to snap a 5-game losing streak as they sit at 4-6 on the year.

North Posey Boys Basketball welcomes Tecumseh for a 7:00 PM tipoff. The Vikings are 8-2 on the season.

In Men’s College Basketball tonight, the Indiana Hoosiers play host to Minnesota at 5:30 PM. The Hoosiers are 11-5 on the year and 3-2 in the Big 10.

From the NBA, the Indiana Pacers start a 6-game road-trip in Atlanta against the Haws at 6:30 PM. Indiana has won 8 of their last 9 games and are 22-15 on the season, which is good enough for 4th place in the Eastern Conference.
