Coming up tomorrow evening the Mt. Vernon Wildcats Football program is having a scrimmage night at the high school football field. 3rd and 4th graders will get a chance to scrimmage against each other from 5:30 PM until 6:00 PM. Then 5th and 6th graders will play from 6:00 PM until 6:30 PM. There will be junior high recognition at 6:30 PM and then the high school team will scrimmage until about 7:30 PM. There will be concessions available. They will be brought to you by the M-Club. They will have burgers, hotdogs, popcorn, candy, and drinks.

Next Friday night is scrimmage week for all IHSAA teams and then two weeks from tonight the regular season kicks off. Mt. Vernon will play at North Posey in the opener.

 

This weekend at St. Phillip Catholic Church it’s the St. Phillip Summer Social. The social will take place on Saturday and Sunday. They encourage the community to come out and enjoy a fun-filled weekend of new kids’ games and plenty of food. They say that on Sunday they will have their usual chicken dinner. Ice Cream will be available both days, raffle tickets will be sold both days, and there will also be an auction.

Yesterday on the USI campus, local health care professionals, caregivers, and older adults gathered to focus on topics involving aging and wellness. It’s the 16th year for the Mid-America Institute. During the two-day event, people learn about several health topics, exercise, dementia care, chronic disease management, and mental health. During the event, university leaders announced it had received a $100,000 grant from Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield. This money will help fund scholarships for USI students enrolled in several programs offered in gerontology.

 

The St. Louis Cardinals could not complete the 3-game sweep of the Tampa Bay Rays at home last night as they fell 6-4. The Cardinals drop to 59-57 and are now 2.5 games back of the Mets for the final wild card spot in the National League. St. Louis heads to Kansas City tonight at 7:10 PM for the first of two with the Royals.

The Chicago Cubs were off last night. They play at the Chicago White Sox this evening at 7:10 PM. It’s also a brief 2-game series. The Cubs sit at 57-60 on the year.

The Cincinnati Reds picked up a 10-4 win over the Marlins in Miami on Thursday. It was an extra inning victory for the Reds, as they scored 7 runs in the 10th inning. Cincy improves to 56-59. They head to Milwaukee and start a 3-game weekend set against the Brewers. Tonight’s first pitch is slated for 7:10 PM.

 

This weekend is the first week of NFL Preseason games. The Indianapolis Colts play on Sunday at 12:00 PM at home against the Denver Broncos.

The Chicago Bears play in Buffalo against the Bills on Saturday at 12:00 PM.

The Tennessee Titans welcome the San Francisco 49ers Saturday evening at 6:00 PM.

The Green Bay Packers head to Cleveland on Saturday at 3:25 PM to square off with the Browns.

The Cincinnati Bengals play host to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Saturday night at 6:00 PM.
