Nearly a week after an active shooter incident, the Walmart store on the west side of Evansville has reopened. Officials with the company announced that the store on South Red Bank Road reopened at 6:00 a.m. today. That's after an active shooter incident that unfolded at the store last Thursday. Police said a former employee of the store, Ronald Mosley II, walked in with a handgun and targeted employees while they were gathering for a meeting late that night. Mosley was killed after exchanging gunfire with authorities, but not before shooting a former co-worker, sending her to the hospital with serious injuries, police said. Mosley had previously been arrested and banned from the store in 2022, after authorities said he attacked multiple coworkers. While Mosley faced four misdemeanor counts in the case and was attending Mental Health Court for treatment, court officials said they had no legal reason to prevent him from owning a gun. Police haven't said how Mosley got the 9mm handgun used in the attack.

The University of Evansville held the final round of the ninth High School Changemaker Challenge yesterday. A total of 20 individual and team entries were featured at the event, and high school students presented their ideas to a panel of judges for a chance at a scholarship. First place winner, Evansville Day School Senior Tyler Myers, won first place with his idea for an interactive app that educated children about invisible disabilities. Myers wanted to thank a special person who inspired him for this project. Along with the first place win, Myers also received a prize in the form of full tuition paid for four years to the University of Evansville. He hopes to implement his app in schools in the near future.

Jasper Native Scott Rolen, a seven-time All-Star who won eight Gold Glove Awards for fielding at third base during a 17-season career in the major leagues, was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame yesterday. Rolen was the only one of the 28 candidates to reach that threshold with 297 votes, which accounted for 76.3 percent of the electorate. He will be honored during Induction Weekend 2023 July 21-24 in Cooperstown, N.Y., at the July 23rd Induction Ceremony on the grounds of the Clark Sports Center. Rolen attended Jasper High School and was named Indiana’s Mr. Baseball during his senior season in 1993. He also played basketball and tennis and was a runner-up for Indiana’s Mr. Basketball. During Rolen’s 17-year MLB Career, he played for the Phillies, Cardinals, Blue Jays, and Reds.
