The National Weather Service's forecast for the winter storm is coming into better focus. The agency issued a winter storm watch that covers all Southwestern Indiana and the northern portions of Western Kentucky and Southern Illinois. The watch takes effect tomorrow at noon and lasts until 6:00 AM Friday. There's also a wind chill watch that kicks in at 6:00 PM tomorrow evening and goes through 6:00 PM Friday. The National Weather Service says 2-4 inches of snow is possible in Evansville. Precipitation will start as rain during the daylight hours tomorrow, then transition to snow tomorrow evening as cold air rolls into the region behind a front. The bigger issue tomorrow and Friday will be high winds mixing with cold temperatures, resulting in dangerously low wind chill levels. According to National Weather Service statistics, it's been 3,270 days, basically nine years since the last Wind Chill watch in the Evansville forecast region. In the Evansville areas, the low wind chill temperature is expected to reach minus-24 tomorrow night and minus-16 on Friday night, according to the National Weather Service. Sustained winds late tomorrow into Friday will be above 20 mph out of the west, with gusts reaching 45 mph at times. The weather service forecast points to subzero wind chills from 8:00 PM tomorrow through midday Sunday.
The Evansville City Council seat left behind by Justin Elpers will soon be filled. The Vanderburgh County GOP announced yesterday afternoon that Angela Koehler Lindsey will be taking the position as Elpers moves to the Vanderburgh County Commission. Lindsey, a familiar face for many, previously served as a member on the county council. City officials are to set to swear in Angela Koehler Lindsey at the beginning of the year.
After Indiana drivers saw the highest December gasoline use tax on record, they will see some relief at the pump. The Indiana Department of Revenue recently published the gasoline use tax calculation for January. The calculation shows the rate starting January 1st will be 19.9 cents, down from 23.3 cents in December. The department calculates the gasoline use tax by taking the average retail price per gallon of gasoline in the prior month and multiplying it by the state retail tax of .07 cents. The state said the average retail cost was $2.8424. This is the highest January gasoline use tax on record. The tax has increased steadily since it reached its lowest point on record in June 2020. The gasoline use tax is higher than at any point before 2022.
The Indianapolis Colts will start Nick Foles at quarterback for their Week 16 Monday night game against the Los Angeles Chargers, interim head coach Jeff Saturday announced today. Saturday emphasized the Colts' offensive struggles have not all been on quarterback Matt Ryan, but decided to make the change with winning in mind. Saturday said, “I feel like Nick will give us a better chance to win these last three games.” Saturday said the Colts haven't decided if Ryan or Sam Ehlinger will back up Foles on Monday, and that the team's plan at quarterback will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis to close out the season. Foles signed with the Colts as a free agent back in May. The 6-foot-6, 243-pound Foles has started 56 games over his 11-year career spent with the Philadelphia Eagles (2012-2014, 2017-2018), St. Louis Rams (2015), Kansas City Chiefs (2016), Jacksonville Jaguars (2019) and Chicago Bears (2020-2021). Over those stops, Foles has 14,003 passing yards with 82 touchdowns, 43 interceptions and a passer rating of 87.3; he was named a Pro Bowler in 2013 and earned MVP honors in the 2018 Super Bowl with the Eagles.
