There are a couple of traffic advisories for people in Mt. Vernon this week as there will be three railroad crossings that will be closed for construction. The crossings at Main Street and Walnut Street in Mt. Vernon are closed through Thursday (September 29th) and will be set to reopen this Friday (September 30th). The crossing at Givens Road between Country Mark and GAF will be closed starting today and will stay closed through the weekend. It will reopen next Monday, October 3rd. Bus routes will be adjusted to avoid these areas. Expect delays in both the morning pick up and afternoon drop off this week.
Mt. Vernon Boys Basketball announced that they will be having their 2nd Annual Trivia Night on November 12th. The Trivia Night will be held at the American Legion in Mt. Vernon, as last year they had over 100 participants. There will be dinner and prizes. To participate in the Trivia Night, the cost is 25 dollars per-player with teams up to 6 players. Junior Achievement of Southwestern Indiana hosted the 21st annual J. A. Free Enterprise Invitational golf tournament. The annual golf scramble is the organization’s largest fundraiser of the year. The event took place at Victoria National Golf Club. It consisted of thirty-three teams of four playing 18 holes. Junior Achievement supports youth by showing them how money, careers, and business ownership work so they are ready to own their economic success. The event also included a celebrity shoot-out contest between Mayor Lloyd Winnecke and UE Men’s Basketball Head Coach David Ragland, where the mayor came out on top.
The 2022 West Side Nut Club Fall Festival kicks off next Monday, October 3rd. Just last week, rides for the annual street festival started arriving in Evansville. This week is the last chance to get pre-sale ride wristband vouchers at a discounted price. Another highly anticipated Fall Festival event is the half-pot, which reached a grand total of $1,515,260 in 2021. This year's half-pot will kick off on the first day of the Fall Festival, with four ticket booths located along Franklin Street. The offerings of the Fall Festival won't slow down as the week goes on. Towards the end of the festival, there will be the Fall Festival Pet Parade, in addition to the Fall Festival Main Parade. For this year's Main Parade, Posey County Sheriff's Deputy Bryan Hicks has been chosen as Grand Marshal. Once again, the 101st West Side Nut Club Fall Festival kicks off next Monday, October 3rd, and runs through Saturday, October 8th.
Local Sports Tonight:
- Mt. Vernon Volleyball is home vs Gibson Southern. The JV match is at 6:00 PM and the Varsity match will follow at 7:30 PM.
- Mt. Vernon Girls Soccer travels to North Posey at 6:30 PM.
- North Posey Volleyball welcomes Wood Memorial. JV match at 5:30 PM and the Varsity match is set for 7:00 PM.
- North Posey Boys Soccer plays host to Forest Park at 5:00 PM.
- USI Volleyball is home on campus taking on Eastern Illinois at 6:00 PM. Screaming Eagles Volleyball is still searching for their first Division One win as they are 0-13.
