A temporary road closure will impact drivers on State Road 62 in Posey County starting next week. The Indiana Department of Transportation says the temporary road closures will begin on or around Monday, October 24th. That's when contractors with Center Point Energy and High-Country Construction will be out performing spot improvements along State Road 62 near Green Valley Drive. These projects call for temporary lane closures in both directions of State Road 62. According to the project manager, traffic will be controlled by a flagger team while the closures are active. Daily work will begin at 8:00 AM and wrap up by 6:00 PM, leaving the lanes open each evening. According to INDOT, if the weather cooperates, the project could be finished by the end of the week.

 

Coming up this Friday in Mt. Vernon, Alexandrian Public Library is hosting a Halloween Party at 6:00 PM. Doors open at 5:50 PM. Registration is required to attend. To register, you can call the library at 812-838-3286 or visit the information desk at the library. There will be a boo-rific show performed by Ralph Covert, the musician, of Ralph’s World at 6:00 PM in the Ohio/Wabash Room. After the performance, there will be games, photos, refreshments, treat bags, a parade, and more. You are encouraged to come dressed in a costume.

 

Just a heads up for local parents, Financial Aid Night is being held this Thursday at Mt. Vernon High School at 6:00. The meeting will be held in the High School Media Center. A financial aid representative will give a FAFSA presentation and answer questions about financial aid for post-secondary education. The FAFSA window is currently open, as that started on October 1st and will run until April 15th.

 

Basketball season is right around the corner and today was the OVC Media Day in downtown Evansville. Both USI Men’s and Women’s Basketball are gearing up for their first season competing at the Division One level. Today, the OVC preseason rankings were released. USI Men’s Basketball was picked to finish 7th, as they received 78 points in the preseason poll. Morehead State was picked to win the OVC, followed by Tennessee State and UT Martin. Senior Guard Jelani Simmons was the Eagles lone representative on the Preseason All-OVC Team. Simmons averaged 14 points and 4.5 rebounds last season.

On the Women’s side USI was also picked to finish 7th in the OVC, as the received 66 points. Tennessee Tech was picked to win the conference, followed by UT Martin and Little Rock. Senior Forward Hannah Haithcock was USI’s lone representative on the Preseason All-OVC Team. She averaged 12 points and almost 5 rebounds last season.

The annual USI Midnight Madness event returns this Thursday evening to Screaming Eagles Arena on campus, to introduce the inaugural Division I USI Women's and Men's Basketball teams. Doors open 8:30 PM and the event is open to the public, free of charge. Midnight Madness starts at 9:00 PM. Both teams open the regular season on November 7th. USI Men’s Basketball will play at Missouri, while USI Women’s Basketball plays host to Oakland City.
