News:
Arctic temperatures are still on their way later in the week. Here's how powerful Thursday's cold front will be for Mt. Vernon and Evansville. At lunch time on Thursday, the wind chill reading will be 35 degrees. By dinnertime, it'll feel like minus-5 degrees outside. Then by 6:00 AM on Friday, the wind-chill reading is expected to be minus-21 degrees, a drop of 56 degrees from just 18 hours earlier. The National Weather Service has backed off its snow forecasts slightly, now saying that an inch of snow is likely, and two inches are possible. Much of the precipitation that falls Thursday will be rain, with the heaviest amounts expected after noon. The rain should change to snow by 6:00 or 7:00 PM on Thursday, with the heaviest snow falling before midnight. But the main concerns with this storm are unusually gusty winds that will make bitterly cold air feel even worse. Additionally, any snow that does fall will be blown around, causing reduced visibility for drivers. Northwest winds will gust between 40 and 50 mph from 6:00 PM Thursday through late Friday night. Conditions won't improve much on Saturday, when winds will still be in the 30-35 mph range in the Mt. Vernon and Evansville areas. The National Weather Service has mentioned several times this week that some parts of the Tri-State could experience sub-zero wind chills for 60 straight hours.
With Christmas approaching, Ritzy’s Fantasy of Lights is approaching its busiest week. This coming week also bring colder weather. Mission Communications with Easterseal, Pam Kirk says they will try their best to stay open even as the temperature drops. They have plans to provide heating for volunteers who will be working during those colder days. Kirk says even with the colder temperature there is plenty of excitement. She says that although they plan to stay open, they will update if anything changes. For more information go to the Ritzy’s Fantasy of Lights website.
Another mobile food distribution event is happening tomorrow for residents in Evansville. Tri-State Food Bank is planning to hold its next mobile food share event at Bosse Field from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM. noon, or until boxes run out. No ID or requirements are necessary to receive a food box at the event, but Tri-State Food Bank says there's a limit of one box per household. You can locate Bosse Field at 23 N. Main St. in Evansville.
Officials say the annual Christmas tree disposal service will begin on Tuesday, December 27th, and continue through Friday, January 6th, 2023. If you are an Evansville Water and Sewer Utility (EWSU) residential customer, you can place your Christmas tree next to the trash cart at the curb on the day of your scheduled trash collection and Republic Services will pick it up and take it to the landfill. The Christmas tree disposal service is for EWSU residential customers who pay for trash and recycling with their monthly water and sewer bill. The service is not available to retail, commercial or business customers, or to residents who live in apartment complexes, mobile home communities, or outside the city limits.
