The National Weather Service in Paducah has issued a “Red Flag Warning” for many counties within our Tri-State, including Posey County. Weather officials say the wind and dry conditions will create critical fire danger today. The warning will stay in effect until 8:00 PM tonight. NWS strongly discourages outdoor burning since fires are likely to spread rapidly. Indiana areas impacted include Posey, Vanderburgh, Warrick, Spencer, Gibson, and Pike counties. The weather service asks residents to avoid tossing cigarette butts, outdoor burning, campfires and grilling, off-road travel, use of machinery, and welding. 

 

The Mt. Vernon Marching Wildcats present their community performance this evening at the Football Field. The performance gets underway at 7:30 PM.  

 

Just a few days left to get your tickets for this Saturday’s cash drawing, benefiting Newlife Rescue and Adoption. Tickets are on sale at the Posey Humane Society and Elks Lodge #277 in Mt. Vernon. Tickets are $10 each. First prize is $5,000, second prize is $2,000, third prize is $1,000, and fourth prize is $500. Once again, the drawing is this Saturday.

 

Mt. Vernon Kiwanis Club and McKim’s IGA are teaming up for the youth of Mt. Vernon with a Rib Fest tomorrow at 2:00 PM. A full slab of ribs are 18 dollars. You can contact a Kiwanis member for pre-sales and pick it up at the IGA in Mt. Vernon tomorrow. You are to make the checks payable to McKim’s IGA.

 

The University of Southern Indiana’s RN program has been ranked as one of the best in Indiana. According to Registered Nursing, USI is home to some of the most widely acclaimed nursing curriculum in the state. Officials say with BSN and MSN pathways to guide nursing students to their goals, USI graduates are caring advocates of individuals, families, and communities. USI ranked behind Indiana University Northwest, which came in at number one. Registered Nursing says nursing programs were assessed on several factors which represent how well a program supports students during school, towards getting their license, and beyond.

 

CenterPoint Energy is encouraging customers to get ready to manage natural gas bills for the upcoming heating season. Officials say customers will likely see an increase in their natural gas bills, when compared to those of last winter, due to natural gas market conditions. This year, based upon expected natural gas commodity costs and normal winter weather, officials say customers can expect to pay on average $150 a month, over the 5-month heating season of November through March. By comparison, last year’s average bill amount for the 5-month period was around $145 a month. CenterPoint Energy will also be participating in the City of Evansville’s recently scheduled Access to Service Fairs, which will be hosted throughout the upcoming winter heating season. Company representatives will be onsite to speak with customers and provide resources.

 

Early voting began on Wednesday at The Old National Events Plaza in Evansville, where early voting is taking place Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. If you are registered to vote, all you need is a valid Indiana ID to vote ahead of the election on November 8th. According to the election office, 128,308 people in Vanderburgh County have registered to vote, with that number expected to go up. As of Wednesday, over 2,000 people have requested mail in ballots, with over half of those having already been turned in. Early voting will conclude on November 7th at noon.

 

The Miami Heat signed former Evansville Reitz basketball standout Dru Smith to a two-way contract on Wednesday. This marks the first NBA contract for the Evansville native. Smith, who went undrafted out of Missouri in 2021, spent this past season with the Heat’s G-League affiliate. The 24-year-old guard later played with Miami during the 2022 Summer League. Entering his second year within the Heat organization, Smith made a strong impression during the NBA preseason, averaging 8.8 points over four games. He turned in his best performance of the preseason on Monday, delivering a 15-point outing against the Houston Rockets. The two-way deal will allow Smith to suit up in as many as 50 games this season for the Heat.

 

The unofficial tipoff to basketball season at the University of Evansville will take place this Saturday with Meeks Madness on campus at Meeks Family Fieldhouse. Festivities are set to begin at 6:00 PM, with the doors opening at 5:00 PM. The event features the Purple Aces men’s and women’s basketball teams, as well as the spirit squad. The evening will consist of a dunk contest, scrimmages, autographs, giveaways, and more. Admission is $5 and the first 100 UE students who get tickets from inside the Carson Center Ticket Office will receive free admission. The Meeks Madness event is sponsored by Brackett Heating and Air.

 

Local Sports Tonight: 

- North Posey Volleyball plays their first-round sectional match against Perry Central at 5:30 PM. The Vikings play in the Class 2A Sectional 48 hosted by Perry Central High School. 

- University of Evansville Women's Soccer is home on campus taking on Drake at 6:00 PM. The Purple Aces are 1-8-4 on the year and 0-5-2 in the MVC.
