It was a big day for Mount Vernon High School and the athletics department as 3 big announcements were made yesterday afternoon. Kaleigh Kelley and Sophie Kloppenburg both signed letters of intent with Division I colleges to continue their swimming careers. Kaleigh Kelley signed her letter of intent with Indiana State University and will be a member of the Sycamores team and compete in the Missouri Valley Conference. Kaleigh plans to study biology and business and long term pursue dental school. Sophie Kloppenburg signed her letter of intent to swim for Columbia University in New York as part of the IVY League and has plans to focus on sustainable development with a minor in chemistry or politics and interest in public policy. Both swimmers showed their excitement to finish their season before moving on to their college swimming careers.
The Mount Vernon School Board voted unanimously in a special session for Justin Fischer to be named as the new head coach of the Mount Vernon Varsity Football team. Justin presently serves as the assistant principal of Mount Vernon High School. He was also formerly the defensive coordinator for the Wildcats in the last three seasons. Justin began his football coaching career as a assistant coach at Riverton Parke High School in Montezuma in 2005. In 2007 he became the defensive coordinator and then moved to Columbus North as the varsity linebacker coach. From 2009 to 2016 Justin was the varsity defensive coordinator for North Vermillion and had a very impressive record of 75-25 that included a perfect season in 2014 and a 1A IHSAA State Championship. Evansville baseball native Don Mattingly has been brought into the picture with the Nashville Stars as of an announcement yesterday. Officials with the Stars say that Mattingly will provide counsel on key strategic matters and work to bring Major League Baseball to Nashville Tennessee. The Nashville Stars are in the early stages of starting their MLB franchise.
The woman at the center of a high-profile case in Evansville, Indiana made her latest appearance in court today. Amy Word appeared for a hearing in court this morning following her July 2022 arrest. During her court appearance today, Word's next court date was set for March 13th. Additionally, there was a motion for travel that was filed by Word, which the judge granted. Word was taken into custody during a traffic stop in connection to the drug investigation on West Franklin Street, police said. They said that Word was arrested on the charge of the felony charge of Maintaining a Common Nuisance, and that she had knowledge of narcotics activity at her place of business, Lamasco Bar and Grill. While Word remains a member of the EVSC Board of School Trustees, board members approved an unpaid leave of absence for Word after she declined to resign from her position. If word was found guilty of a felony, she would automatically be terminated from the board. No other updates are available right now.
Officials with the Old National Events Plaza say they are hosting a hiring event tonight. Positions range from culinary team members to security. Officials say hiring will take place on the spot. The event will be from 4:30 p.m. until 6 p.m. For those of you who are interested, they say to be sure to bring your government issued I.D.
Another ‘Access to Service Fair’ event will be held this evening in Evansville. That means people will be able to speak one-on-one with CenterPoint Energy and Evansville Water and Sewer Utility representatives about their accounts. Officials from local assistance agencies and Township Trustees Offices will also be there. That event will take place tonight from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the CK Newsome Center. Another ‘Access to Service Fair’ is also planned for Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon.
