A Winter Storm Warning is in effect until midnight tonight for the Mt. Vernon and Evansville area. Rain will be changing to snow during the afternoon and early evening hours tonight. Temps will drop into the lower 20s by 5:00 PM with wind chills dropping below zero after 7:00 PM. For tonight, it will be windy with blowing snow as temperatures crash to -4. Snow accumulations of 2-4 inches are possible with wind chills in the range of -18 to -32. There is a rare Wind Chill Warning covering tonight until noon tomorrow. Tomorrow morning, we will see wind chills in the range of -14 to -29 with scattered snow showers. Tomorrow’s high temperature will only reach 6 degrees. Friday night, partly cloudy and brisk as low temperatures drop to 3-degrees. Then on Saturday, we will have partly to mostly sunny skies and as the temps recover into the mid-teens for Christmas Eve.
The City of Mt. Vernon posted on Facebook a message from the Water Superintendent. During the cold front, do not open your water meter box as it will freeze and cause extended issues. If you are experiencing issues with your water, call the water department and they will come out to help alleviate the issues. If you run your faucets during the cold front, that is alright but, keep in mind that it will show on your monthly statement.
North Posey Basketball has had their games today and tomorrow in the Toyota Classic postponed due to the incoming weather. They will make those games up by playing twice on Monday, January 2nd at 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM at Wood Memorial High School. Those two games will be against Wood Memorial and White River Valley.
With extreme cold expected this weekend, warming centers will be open across the state for those in need of a safe and warm place to stay. Indiana 211 is a resource for updated locations and hours of warmings centers in your area, as many of the traditional locations people may seek shelter could be closed due to the holidays. Members with the West Side Nut Club say they have approved more than $30,000 for local food banks and shelters. They say they were able to operate below budget this fiscal year, which is where the funds came from. According to a press release, some of the organizations include Evansville Rescue Mission, St. Vincent DePaul Food Bank, Salvation Army, United Caring Shelter, Westside Food Pantry and Meals on Wheels. Officials say they are glad to be able to help these organizations during such a crucial time of the year.
Ritzy’s Fantasy of Lights, as well as Santa Claus Land of Lights, is closed tonight, due to severe weather. Officials with Ritzy’s Fantasy of Lights say this is the third time in the event’s 29-year history they’ve had to close because of weather. They say it will be too cold, and the roads could be dangerous. They are hopeful that tonight is the only night the event will be closed but will make additional announcements if needed.
Officials with Mesker Park Zoo announced they will be closed this weekend to keep animals, guests, and staff members safe from the severe weather that’s forecasted in the Tri-State over the next few days. In a Facebook post, officials say the zoo is closing Friday through Sunday. Zoo officials say their plan is to reopen at 9:00 AM on Monday, December 26th.
