A Mt. Vernon man is facing charges after police say he assaulted a juvenile and attempted to rob him. According to a press release, on December 22nd officers were called to the 900 block of Walnut Street in reference to an assault. When they arrived, the juvenile victim told them he was approached by a man wearing a ski mask. He says the man demanded money from him, took him to the ground and hit him in the eye. An affidavit shows, the father of the victim saw the suspect driving near the area of the assault and began following him. The father told police that the suspect then wrecked his vehicle around Canal Street and 6th Street, jumped out of his car and ran away. According to a release, police found the vehicle’s owner and were able to identify him as 25-year-old Walter Hampton-Rainey. Police say they found Hampton-Rainey at his home. He told police he was hit by the truck following him and it took off. He also told police he ran from the scene because he was scared that the truck had been following him. Hampton-Rainey proceeded to change his story as the interview continued, according to officials. On December 28th, police say they conducted another interview with Hampton-Rainey at the police station. They say he told them he was ready to tell the truth and further investigation led to his arrest. According to an affidavit, Hampton-Rainey also informed police that he was not the driver of the vehicle. An Evansville man is behind bars on arson charges after being accused of starting a house fire on South Bosse Avenue. Investigators say 33-year-old William Montrose was arrested on those charges after the Saturday fire, which caused extensive damage to the home on South Bosse Avenue on Evansville's west side. While looking into the cause of the fire, authorities said they learned that Montrose had been in an argument with another person at the home before the fire started. They say that evidence also showed Montrose had previously threatened to set the home on fire. When authorities interviewed Montrose, they say he claimed that the fire was started by lit cigarettes being thrown during the argument. In addition to the home where the fire started being deemed "unlivable," authorities said between $10,000 and $15,000 worth of damage was also caused to the home next door. Montrose was charged with arson and booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail.
In the morning on New Year's Eve, flames dozens of feet tall erupted from a warehouse in the 1400 block of Garvin St. in Evansville. Firefighters responded to reports of a loud explosion followed by the beginning of the fire. By Sunday night, there were no visible flames in the rubble of the building. Evansville Fire Department Division Chief Mike Larson said their job is far from done. "This is going to be a very long process to get this all totally extinguished before we can get excavators in and start turning things over and get to some of those hotspots under the roof material that collapsed when the building fell in.” The blaze became so large in a matter of hours, that off-duty personnel and firefighters from all over the tri-state were called in to respond. Firefighters were forced to take a defensive stance, attempting to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby homes and businesses. Chief Larson emphasizes that the area is still very active, both with hotspots in the rubble and with poor air quality from burning plastics and other materials. Smoke from structure fires can contain cancer-causing chemicals with long-term health effects. A wide radius around the fire has been blocked off to protect firefighters as they fill up their fire engines at hydrants across several blocks and transport the water to the scene.
